I returned recently from the Villa D'Este. I want to go back.

Thank you, Floridagal, for the tip about comolimo-- Milan was fantastic and it was a very comfortable transfer to and from the airport. The Villa D'Este quoted €160 to the airport, and comolimo was €110 if paid in cash.

BLV, I see you, too, were up on the 4th floor (the tiles from the window being the giveaway!)

We were more directly facing the lake, just under the sign on the roof that says 'Villa D'Este' and the room was really quite comfortable. Not as lavish or bombastic as the 1st and 2nd floor rooms with their higher ceilings and balconies, but I won't complain. There was a generous sitting area and a very large dressing room.

Additionally, I was quite pleased with the bathtub.

There was a separate shower, and it's size was probably my only complaint. It was a tight fit, so certainly only one person can shower (!), and I had issues with the temperature, as it was either much too hot or much too cold and getting it in the happy middle was trying. But that's a small complaint.

Across the board, service was excellent. We arrived on a very early flight, and our room was ready for a 9 am check-in, and we were also able to have breakfast that first morning, which we very much appreciated. Housekeeping was extremely generous in restocking everything (I'm miffed when hotels are stingy or weird about restocking toiletries), and I rather enjoyed the scent of the products, which struck me as very Italian in the Santa Maria Novella vein. There were two full services a day, and turndown was accompanied by what turned out to be very tasty chocolates indeed, as well as a bottle of water. We also got lovely sweets on our arrival and departure.

Breakfast was superb.

I didn't have a spa service-- although the prices were, to this New Yorker's eyes, extremely reasonable (check out prices at any Mandarin Oriental for comparison)-- but I enjoyed the rest of the facilities. The sauna and steam rooms are gender segregated; on the women's side there wasn't a plunge pool (as I was told there was on the men's), but there was this fun parade of jets that sprayed from the ankles up. The sauna was actually hot, and the steam room was steamy. Towels, swimcaps (required in the indoor pool), slippers, and robes were all available at the facility's desk.

Also, I'd like to note everything in the hotel was absolutely pristine. Even in the nightclub, which had lots of red velvet, it was pristine. You'd think there'd be spots from someone spilling a drink (or worse). But nothing. The carpets in the rooms and public areas: pristine. Someone said that they replace everything at the end of the season (and I was there at the very end of the season when, if that is true, there should have been some signs of wear, but everything looked totally new.)
