Stayed at the St. Regis Club at the Essex House in NYC this past Friday (8/31/2001) on a Starwood Free Friday.

In short the hotel was great! The hotel is on Central Park South, right across the street from Central Park. Cab trip from Penn Station was 10 minutes for about $5. Check in was delayed by 5 or 10 minutes while they checked to make sure our room was OK. We had reserved a regular room, but our totally great Platinum Concierge (thank you, Mark) had arranged an upgrade to a SWANK 1 bedroom suite with a view looking straight up Central Park.

The room was spacious, clean and well lit with separate living room and bedroom. The living room had a small dining room table for four in it as well. The suite also had a very attractive marble bathroom with a stall shower and a huge tub. The linens were all top quality and the furniture and carpets were in good repair. The property was definitely not tired and showed signs of just having been renovated.

The 5 to 10 minute delay checking in allowed our butler(!) time to put the room in order and get us set up. We had reservations to meet my fiancee's parents 30 minutes after we arrived. I asked the butler if I could get my shoes shined. He nodded, took the shoes and had them back in 10 minutes with new shoe laces. The 1 night stay was marked by other such examples of very keen attention to detail by everyone with whom we came into contact.

I highly recommend this hotel if you're going to be in NYC.
