Booking

I booked this at the last minute with useaamiles.com which seems like the same agency that does aavacations.com. 20000 AAdvantage miles per night in a large 1 bedroomed apartment that was selling for around $450 per night.

Check In

At check-in they recognised my SPG Gold status and profusely apologised that I would not earn points. However they promised me an upgrade (I'm not sure if it really was) and also took great care to keep me away from overnight noise - which was complicated by a televised boxing match in York Hall at the back and a wedding in the hotel on each of the three nights I was there (creating noise at the front). But the room they gave me did indeed seem very quiet and the only noise I heard was drunked wedding guests returning clumsily down the hall to their rooms.

Room

The keys didn't work - in fact the lock was broken - but they fixed it very efficiently.

However, the rooms do feel a bit beaten and battered for their relatively young age. The furniture had that style anyway - and probably always had. But the bed was particularly lumpy and the bath taps so stiff that the fixtures were turning in the surround rather than the tap itself turning.

The kitchen was very spacious and everything worked well - an ovenproof plate would be nice, but other than that it was modestly, but well equipped. The espresso machine (by Musetti) is really wonderful and makes excellent coffee and Joe's tea bags are a nice touch too.

Location

The location is out of the way, but not as bad as one might think. When i left I was heading for Gatwick and at Bethnal Green tube there was no chance of getting on a train with luggage, so I walked to WHitechapel and picked up the London overground and was at Gatwick faster than I would have got to Heathrow (54 mins from Whitechapel to Gatwick).

As I said in my other review, the Central Line at Bethnal Green on weekdays is so congested as to be very unpleasant. But this time I was there on a Sat / Sun and it was fine - it is a very fast ride into Central London.

Service

Unlike most apartment hotels, the rooms are serviced each day and dishes washed and put away. I always ran the dishwasher first, but it was always emptied and any cup or glass left lying around was washed and put away too.

Overall

I really enjoyed my weekend here and I will definitely come and stay here again. Hopefully they'll have done a little more maintenance on the rooms by then, and may be a differetn time of year will have fewer weddings.
