Thompson Hollywood / Los Angeles

Thompson Hollywood did not disappoint.  It's a nice, new(ish) upscale hotel.  Based on my experience at several other Thompsons (most recently Zihuatanejo & Beekman/NYC), I'd say this is a rung below those properties.  It's stylish, new, and reasonably well-designed, but not a true luxury hotel.

Check-in was fairly rushed.  Young person handed me my key, pointed around the corner to the lobby/restaurant and sent me on my way.  No mention of hotel's other amenities.  Overall. not a disaster, but far from warm/welcoming.

I was booked into a Terrace King room, which looks like the best/largest room category below suites. 
Room itself was smartly designed, and of a decent size for an urban hotel. 
King bed was large and very comfortable.  Bathroom smallish but well finished.

The 'closet', as at the Beekman, is a large, glass enclosed box between the bathroom and the main space - It looks more like a museum display then a closet, but it works.

A few dings: 

The lighting is nice, with some very cool contemporary floor lamps and table tamps.  I only wish they were controlable by central switches near either/both door or bed.  As it stands, one has to walk around the room turning on/off various lighting pieces.  Soffited lighting is, thankfully, controlled via Lutron wall-switches.
Also, bathroom amenities are pretty bare besides product and hair dryer.  For even an 'upscale' hotel, would have expected and appreciated some sort of travel pak with disposable q-tips, cotton balls, etc, 

By far the best feature of this particular 3rd floor room  - and biggest, literally - was its terrace.  It could easily be twice the square footage of the indoor space, and if it's not it's very close.  It's a LARGE terrace.  Nice wicker chairs, table and a comfy outdoor sofas.  It's a delightful terrace.  Not much 'city view' however, as the entire outdoor space is surrounded by tall plantings.  As the neighborhood directly surrounding the hotel is definitely etch-a-sktech, this may be for the better.  Higher floor rooms will almost certainly afford good to great city/hills views.

Did not eat at the hotel.  There is dining in the lobby and upstairs on the roof at Bar Lis.

Not the best location in Hollywood by a long shot.  It's fairly desolate and industrial.  There's plenty to see/do within several blocks, but the question becomes whether to walk there or not.
It's Hollywood for sure, but not the part you see on postcards or in tourist guides....

I enjoyed my work stay at Thompson Hollywood, I just expected a touch more from the Thompson brand. 
The Tara Bernard design and interiors are lovely, just not as lovely as her work at other hotels (a much better L.A. example being the Conrad DTLA).  This Thompson strikes me as somewhat fussier than her usual designs, with a HUGE accent on plantings.  The lobby is almost jungle-like.

The hard product and ameninites at this hotel are fairly unasaillable.  The rooftop pool was larger than many in in Hollywood and Weho, offering something more than laps.  Though at a maximum depth of four feet, it's really more a wading pool than a swimming pool.  The rooftop bar/lounge/restaurant (Bar Lis) is chic and stylish, offering excellent views.
