Gallery King with City View

I stayed one weekday night on business right after a snowstorm hit NYC in March 2017. I had Diamond status at the time of the stay.

I got a $224 room rate for a Gallery King room, which I consider a solid price given the location. Taxes (NYC flat occupancy, sales, Javits, and NYC) brought the all-in total to $261.

Location

The Renwick Hotel is located on the south side of East 40th Street, just west of the corner of Lexington Avenue and East 40th Street. The hotel is about two blocks south and one block east of Grand Central.

Check In

I did an e-check-in on the morning of my stay. You can do an e-check-in and select a room number, but there was no room map available at the time of my stay. I had a room pre-assigned (with no upgrade message) and went with the pre-assigned room.

When I arrived by taxi shortly before 3pm, there was a lot of snow piled up on the curb between the sidewalk and road. After manuevering the snow bank, I went inside through the main entrance. If I recall correctly, the main entrance is not handicap-accessible; there are multiple steps down into the lobby.

Check-in itself was uneventful. I was told I was upgraded to a room with a view of the Empire State Building and given RFID (tap) plastic key cards for the room. I also received a breakfast voucher for breakfast in Bedford & Co., the hotel's restaurant.

My room was on the 10th floor and did indeed have a good view of the Empire State Building. The window blind can be rolled open or close, via a chain, and features a silhouette of the New York skyline. The room was decked out in furniture that can probably be best described as mid-century modern in darker wood tones.

The overhead light/chandelier with metal arms were pretty unique with five exposed lightbulbs. While mid-century modern isn't really my taste, I have to say that it was well-executed. The bed had a huge headboard and the mattress was reasonably comfortable (tending towards the firm side).

The desk was a little small and the desk chair was functional although not especially comfortable (it was also the only chair in the room). There were lots of accessible power outets, which also have USB receptacles, near the bed and on the desk. There was also a 42" flat-panel TV and a small mini-fridge. In-room coffee lovers beware: there was no coffee machine in the room, although you can request one from the front desk.

There is no true closet in the room, but there was an exposed doorless cabinet between the bathroom wall and bed with hangars as well as a wardrobe unit which houses the ironing board, iron, and mini-fridge. You should also find a bathrobe in your cabinet...but mine was missing. I wasn't sure if the room was supposed to come with one, but the front desk confirmed that all rooms should have bathrobes and sent one up about five minutes after I asked them about it.

The thermostat functioned as expected.

On an amusing note, the do-not-disturb indicator was a paintbrush hanging from a piece of looped string.

Bathroom

The bathroom was quite large by hotel standards, and even more so for a New York hotel room. It has a floor comprised of large dark tiles and an enclosed glass shower area with sliding door.

There was a fixed overhead showerhead and a handheld jet wand. Controls for the water were located on the opposite side of the shower.

The bathroom was stocked with Apotheke toiletries, although only the soap bar and body lotion came in mini-form. Shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner are in large dispenser bottles bolted to the shower wall. All of the Apotheke products were lemongrass-scented.

The counter space around the sink was a bit small, but otherwise it was a spacious and clean bathroom.

Diamond members get free continental breakfast in the window-less Bedford & Co., the hotel's restaurant. I received my paper voucher at check-in. There is no lounge in this hotel.

The voucher explicitly states that it cannot be used as credit towards other items on the menu. As far as non-buffet free continental breakfasts go, it was a pretty decent. You can pick from a set continental breakfast menu with a voucher.

Pick any 3 out of 4:

  • Yogurt with granola
  • Steel-cut Irish oats, cinnamon apple
  • Homemade waffle
  • Pastries: croissant, pain au chocolate, blueberry muffins

You also have your choice of beverages: coffee, orange juice, or grapefruit juice.

I had the first three options and orange juice. While none of the breakfast items were mind-shatteringly delicious, they were all well-presented, of good quality, and satisfying. The waffle was especially warm and fluffy. Service was also solid.

Overall

While there was nothing especially extraordinary about my stay, the Renwick Hotel has definitely made it onto my list of hotels to stay at in New York. Furnishings and finishes are in excellent condition, and there interesting decorative touches both in rooms and throughout the common areas of the hotel.

Given the location and $224 room rate, I think the hotel provided a lot of value for the money.
