Stats

We stayed at the hotel early last week. As indicated above, the club lounge on the 44th floor is closed for about six months, slated to open late April/early May. When I visited the lounge (currently occupying the lobby cafe) I was talking to the check-in lady, who turned out to be the hotel’s VIP Manager, Zoe Cohen. Zoe told me a little about the remodeling going on, and then invited me to a tour of one of the remodeled rooms. I took the tour with her the next morning.

Remodel summary:

Hallways: Immediately after stepping out of the elevator, you see an improvement. There are bright, new carpets in the hall, as well as new wallpaper. Baseboards have been designed and tested to prevent damage to the walls from housekeeping carts and luggage. The lighting is new and brightens up the previously-dreary halls.

Room

Bedroom: I don’t know if the beds are being replaced, but almost everything else is. There are new nightstands, head-boards, dresser/desk combos, desk chairs, lamps, curtains, shelving units and pictures. The TV has been set into the wall, so it is straight-on to the bed. By moving the desk to the side wall, from against the window, there is now space for a sofa (in the King/Queen rooms) or a table/chairs set (2 Double-bed rooms). There are many more electrical outlets, as each lamp has two. The minibar has been moved to a corner, under some additional shelves, which has the coffee maker and ice bucket on them. (But why put the ice bucket that high off the ground?)

Bathroom: The huge old granite counter top has been replaced with a smaller one, with shelves underneath, so there is more move-about space in the bathroom. Full-wall mirror has been replaced with a smaller one with lights along the side, so the lighting is softer, not as harsh. Unfortunately, the tubs remain the same, no jacuzzi upgrades. Though, some of the club rooms will have tubs removed, with all-glass showers installed. (FYI: That's Zoe in the mirror)

Doors: Now have RFID keys, so you never have to worry about de-magnetizing them nest to your cell-phone. They are not planning on setting a key-deposit, but if too many of them walk out the door, I think that may change.

HVAC: The remodel budget is $165 Million, and something like 1/3 of that is going toward a redo of the Heat/AC system. The HVAC system has been an issue for the property for years, so I was glad to hear this. In the past, it only delivered Heat or Cold, depending on time of year, as there was only one set of pipes. So from May - October (approx) there is only AC available, and during the other months, only Heat is available. If you are warm in the room during March, you were out of luck if you wanted to turn on AC, and had to suffer in a warm room, unless you can get the window open a bit (and there are no screens.) The redone rooms each have additional pipes and electronic thermostats, for year-round heating or cooling.

Phones: New cordless models.

The rooms are still the same smallish-size, but, overall, there are now much improved halls, bedrooms and bathrooms. I would have preferred to see the small tubs upgraded, but since most people take showers and not baths, I can see the reasoning on leaving them as they are. I look forward to staying in one of the new rooms. Oh – there is a rumor that soon, and until all the rooms are remodeled (18+ month process) the property will charge a premium for the remodeled ones.I don't know if PLTs will get comp upgrades to those.

Some additional photos here. The dark ones are due to my camera skills, or lack thereof. The room itself is not dark.
