This review is based on a one night, mid-week stay in a queen pitch view room.
Check In
I managed to get a really good rate, thanks in part to Best Price Guarantee. The day before, at online check in, only 3 or 4 rooms were available on the app to select. There was no map/room plan. I decided to wait to check in to see if anything changed. Over the course of the day and into the next morning, the rooms disappeared and I was not presented with any options, before later being upgraded to a pitch view room. Again I did not select this, waiting to take my chances at check in at the hotel.
On arrival I found a parking space. This was some way from the hotel entrance as there was quite a large function on in the arena, although not a match. Check in at the hotel was fairly pain less and I was given a voucher for a free breakfast as a gold member.
Room
The room was clean and modern, and came fairly well equipped - just remembered I forgot to take the biscuits from the tea/coffee tray (I assume there were some!)
There was lots of electrical sockets, and plenty of lights. However, there was no desk.
Very large TV
The doors were patio style but did not open. It was dark and so I could make out nothing outside the room. I thought this may have been a private 'box'. However, in the morning, in very weak daylight I noticed that the door would have opened directly into the main seating area of the stadium, hence why the doors were locked.
The room was setback, with the upper seating area overhanging the external doors. I am sure, even in the day, that this will make the room somewhat gloomy.
There was a shower, but no bath.
Service
Check in staff were pleasant and friendly. I attempted to order room service at approximately 9.30pm. Thsi should have been available until 10pm before switching to the overnight menu.
There was no number to contact on the menu, and no little buttons on the phone in the room. I eventually called reception who attempted to put me through. After about 5 minutes I was connected, only to be told that the chef had gone home and therefore there was nothing available! Not impressed.
Reception did say the overnight menu was available, but I really did not fancy a cold sandwhich or something reheated in a microwave. Reception staff were most apologetic, and again in the morning when I checked out.
Dining
The onsite restaurant was open, however the menu did not appeal and was quite pricey, hence why I wanted to go for room service.
Breakfast was fairly standard. However, I found the quality of the hot produce not to be that great, and therefore was slightly disappointed.
The brekfast room, and onsite restaurant was something of a souless space. It might be ok for breakfast, at a push, but certainly would not have enjoyed a pleasurable evening meal in here.
View of the restaurant taken from outside in the corridor. Note: no natural light.
Location
The hotel is part of the Ricoh Arena which is home to Coventry City FC and Wasps Rugby Union. They host a number of functions throughout the year. The hotel offers good access to the nearby motorway. There is plenty of parking, but will be problematic on match days.
Overall
The room was good. The service - or lack of it in terms of room service, was not. Breakfast was somewhat of a disappointment. Perhaps I am slightly bias given that I have had numerous stays at Doubletree Newcastle Airport which is a fantastic hotel.
Although it was a nice room, overall I don't think I would rush to come back here.
