Traditional Room with Balcony

Overall: A nice hotel, still going through some opening pains, but worth it -- even more so if you can get in while it's still relatively empty.

The hotel was nearly empty for our stay (I think I saw the numbers... 6 rooms out of 152 were occupied on the busiest night we were there).

It's located on the far north end of the island (10 minute drive from the cancun ferry pier), so getting taxis to get back to downtown can be a hassle if one isn't already waiting out there. On the plus side, this meant that it was quiet enough at night to hear the ocean, as well as the local frogs sing.

Check In

With no one else in the lobby at the time, check-in was prompt, and two welcome drinks were brought to us as we finished checking in.

Room

The room was as expected for a Westin. Nice view from the Balcony, as we were on the 15th floor (there are 15 numbered floors, a "penthouse" level where the suites are, and a rooftop pool level). The A/C and fan worked nicely nice to keep us cool at night.

The bathroom was setup where the toilet had a door separating it from the rest of the room, and the glass shower shared the larger area with the sink. There were two sliding wood doors that one could enter from - one right by the room entrance, and one bedside.

My only gripe about the room was that it felt humid the whole time we were there, even with the A/C running all day. I suppose that being on an island in the carribean should merit some consideration here.

Service

Again, there were almost no other guests there during our stay, so the staff learned our names quickly and were friendly in every encounter. All were genuinely friendly and happy to help.

Dining

The seaside restaurant (Las Gaviotas) had an amazing view at night of the water, which was nice. The food was great, although I did find it a bit odd to eat seafood whilst watching sealife swim by underneath. I had a Mariscos Calzone, which was wonderfully prepared, as well as the popcorn shrimp, which were good, but the tamarind sauce accompanying was the highlight of the dish.

The lobby bar food was good, and the lobby bartender was excellent - at mixing drinks and keeping a conversation going. I did notice that the food came out of the kitchen at Las Gaviotas, which meant that it had to be run from the outside, down the path, and in... with the on/off thunderstorms during our stay, I wonder how it would've worked if the rain had been pouring down at that moment. My companion and I split a 4 cheese pizza and some nachos with arracherra on top. The meat on the nachos was amazing, and I wish I could've ordered a plate that featured that more.

The room service food for breakfast was good, though they did forget to bring cream (or milk) for the coffee.

Growing Pains

As this hotel is still new, it's clear they're still not running at 100% (as of September 2017)

  • The gym/fitness area appeared to be under construction, and scaffolding was still present during our visit. I did see a setup for a spa as well that appeared to be done, but no one was in the area when I visited mid-day.
  • The staff is all fairly new, which meant some things had to be looked up (i.e. the number for the taxi dispatch)

Beach

The beach is almost cove shaped, with plenty of wildlife both in the water and on the nearby rocks. It is a nice beach for the island (particularly the west side, which is usually rocky shores). However, it is still rocky around the edges and some of those rocks are sharp - I wouldn't want to graze by them. It also seems to be a bit small for the hotel -- if it were at capacity, I think they would run out of room on the sun loungers, and any more than 10 or 15 adults in the water would feel crowded.

Pool

There are two pools on the property - one on the beachfront and one infinity pool on the rooftop "Sky Lounge" - both were nice. IMG_0147.JPGIMG_0158.JPG
