Stats

I just stayed at the Grand Hyatt New York last night and it was a pretty terrible stay overall. My room wasn't available when I got there at 3 pm in spite of calling in the morning and verifying-- they gave me a suite so that was good, but we got woken up at 4:30 in the morning by a fire alarm. Worst thing was that it took the idiots 30 min to make an announcement over the PA that it was just a false alarm and when we got down to the lobby (we chanced it and took the elevator, which was probably dumb in retrospect), there was not a single Hyatt staffer to be found to direct people on what to do. And after they finally sent people back up to the rooms, the alarm went off every 15 min. for the next hour or so. I met an Aussie lady in the lobby who had been there for three or four days and told me that the same thing had happened two days before.

Ridiculous. The hotel made the appropriate compensatory gestures after a little prodding, but the hassle of it all was a little too much for my taste. I'll think twice about returning until after the renovations are done.

Unfortunately, the stay COULD have been nice otherwise. The Rate was good-- travelzoo $135. The suite they gave me was very spacious -- basically a Living/Dining area w/a 2-double-bedded room attached, 2 bathrooms. The Diamond amenity was good -- it was odd, the choices for wines are Red, White, and Merlot. I chose Merlot, but they brought the Veramonte Cab. OK, whatever, but the cheese/crackers/fruit were quite ok. And the breakfast buffet at the Sky Lounge was excellent. On the downside, the beds sag but we know that this hotel is going to undergo a major renovation soon, and while some of the staff were really nice, some need an attitude change.
