Mercure Hull Grange Park Hotel

IMG_9867.JPG

Check in was easy, as we had been upgraded ( to a privilege room ) prior to arrival, and been informed of this by e mail. This was a nice touch.  Our room was ready even though we had arrived early. Two drinks vouchers were given along with the room key cards. These were redeemed for beer or soft drinks in the bar.

The sat-nav that we used took us to the back of the hotel with no access to the car park. It would have been better if we had followed the signs. This was our fault, as we went past about four signs! The car park was in front of the hotel and was large and almost empty.

Surrounding the hotel are a few industrial type units, and a retail park with a Waitrose and Toby Carvery and fish and chip restaurant amongst others.

Our upgraded privilege room was on the ground floor of the hotel, in an isolated area (quiet) and had views over some of the hotels extensive gardens, with the health club visible in the distance.

There was a small (empty) fridge and a Nespresso coffee machine together with a kettle and tea and coffee sachets. We took the 2 bottles of water and several soft drinks laid out on a desk (with some very nice biscuits) to be the welcome amenity – although these were replaced on subsequent days. There was also a printed newspaper.

The room was fairly large, (divided by double doors into a junior suite type arrangement by was described as a privilege room on the web site) and was heated by three electric radiators.  It looks like the room had been re decorated sometime in the past, but could have had some more attention spent on it. The ceiling tiles reminded us of a converted office.  The bedroom area had its own TV with the normal free channels and a USB input.

The bathroom had the standard disposable toiletries for a Mercure, but without a comb or toothbrush (reception had non either). The bath had seen better days and had a little mould on it.

The health club had a range of machines, and a pool, steam room, and hot (warm) tub.  We found the pool just too cold for swimming, but the local swimming club were obviously used to it. Again the Hot Tub was warm (although I did ask for the temperature to be taken and it was reported at 37 deg it felt about 30) The pool and sauna area could do with a makeover and refurbishment as there were several tiles missing and it always seemed to be pooled with water that failed to drain on the walk ways. Access was free to hotel guests (who did not need to sign in) I think it is run by an external organisation to the hotel.

All the staff we encountered were friendly and smiley, and the reception team who get some form of reward if mentioned in a review – so thanks Jeff/Geff …. were helpful and informative.

We did not try the breakfast ( £15 walk up or £11 pre booked )

Good and Bad.

This is a Jupiter hotel formed from the remains of the Ramada Jarvis group that failed over 10 years ago. As such money still needs to be spent on the hotel in certain areas. This is my impression of Jupiter hotels that we have previously stayed in.  That said, the welcome and attentions of the staff made the stay very pleasant and welcoming. This is a four star hotel.

There was an option to gain a few ALL points by not having the room cleaned each night, we put the sign out, but never received the points (but the room was cleaned and drinks re stocked – worth more than the 200 points OH said)

We stayed for two nights in January. It was a cheap stay – average 50€ a night in a 4 star. No complaints on that. Would not have been as happy if we had paid the June or July rates.

If you are looking for a deal, they offer rooms through Secret Escapes and Groupon for less than what we paid. Not sure if the status benefits would have been applied. Hotel was mostly empty when we stayed. It would have been 30 – 40€ a night but including breakfast.  It is always annoying to pay more when you are a loyal member!

There is little choice for an Accor Hotel in the area. We last stayed a few years ago just outside York at the Mercure York Fairfield Manor Hotel, and found it more expensive but with service attitude problems.

All in ALL, we had a good stay, basic, but reasonable rooms, but a good bed and an undisturbed and peaceful sleep. In that way the hotel was faultless. It is a hotel we will return to, if the need arises and at the right price.

The hotel is closed at the moment, due to the ongoing virus situation, and will no doubt be different in some ways when it re-opens.
