Suite Deluxe Cathedral

I booked this with points as my 2500th lifetime night, as an Ambassador member.  I also booked a second room for friends for a one-night, Saturday stay in July 2022.

The hotel is in a historical building that has been moderninized over the ages, most recently with a major renovation in 2021.

Hotel email contact: [email protected]

Location

The hotel is located very centrally along one of the major tram lines. Currently there is construction along this line, so the tram is not operating, but I expect that after summer it will be open again.

The area around the hotel is vibrant but not over-crowded. Everything is definitely walkable from the hotel, includinging Petite France, Neustadt, etc.

Check In

9A418E3B-BDED-47B7-A2B9-5BBC5C3AD86C.jpeg

We arrived early and our rooms were not available. We then walked around and came back. There is only one check in desk, which made the check in a bit slower than usual. However, the staff was professional and friendly.

All of us commented on their red elbow pads of their uniforms, which gave them a distinctive look.

I had booked two standard rooms, one with points and one with cash. The cash room was upgraded to the Deluxe Cathedral suite and the points room to a Junior suite.

I was offered a platinum gift of 1000 points or a 10 USD F&B credit for non-alcoholic items. I found this restriction a bit strange and thought it must relate to some local law. In any case I went for the 1000 points.

Breakfast was automatically included since they do not have a lounge.

The bathroom had a nice sized soaking tub. On the wall there was a heated towel rack with separate controls so you can use it any time of the year. The double basin was nice and provided plenty of space for two persons. The multi-use bottles were from Clarins Paris. There were definitely plenty of towels.

There are separate stalls for the toilet and the rain shower. The rain shower also has a handheld shower wand. The overall room has a circular flow, so the bathroom has two doors, both of which can be closed and locked.

The bedroom has a small makeup table and a television.345D5CBB-7FAA-4EE7-97F4-737A96CDF5CF.jpeg

Next to the bed and generally throughout the suite there are plenty of USB-A and power outlets. The bed was very comfortable.

The living room had a larger tv, desk from which I am writing this, coffee machine with mini-bar.

One perhaps minor negative overall is that I found the room controls a bit difficult. I was trying to work at the desk with light without turning on all of the lights (since my partner was sleeping still). After causing disco lighting in the bedroom, I did eventually figure it out. Also some of the accent lighting is motion controlled, which we liked.

The living room has motorized blackout blinds.  The bedroom also, but only for the windows facing the street. This was fine however, since there are also thick curtains which can be drawn.

This is the cathedral view from the bedroom. I guess the equivalent room on the top (6th) floor will have a slightly better view, but I was happy with this. We also liked the Vox building directly across the street.A10E0D70-6EF8-43A6-B6C2-F3E8354D30A8.jpeg

I laughed while looking at this phone, thinking the receiver (in my left hand) had about the number of buttons my technology-challenged mother could handle.

Dining

We had cocktails here in the ground floor bar. They were very good, if somewhat pricey. We also ordered a cheese plate which came with a basket of white bread which was also tasty.

The hotel invited me to a free cocktail to celebrate my 2500th night.

The breakfast is served every day from 6:30-10:30 and is extended on weekends until 11:00. It was very good with a la carte and buffet offerings. It was fairly pricey at 32 EUR per person, if it is not comped for you. If this is more than you want to pay, there is a more basic cafe across the street from the hotel service a la carte items.

Buffet had lots of different things to try. I liked the green pea cold soup and celery salad.

When we got there shortly after 9:00 the room was still fairly empty, but while we were eating the room filled up.

I had the eggs Bénédicte with salmon, which was quite good. One in our party had the French toast, which was also fluffy and tasty, but without maple syrup. This led us into a conversation in which we pondered if French toast actually comes from France or French Canada, since even in Germany we expect it to have maple syrup, which is not so common in France. We will have to google it at some point.

The wait staff also brings coffee and tea to the table. They were quite attentitive and happy to answer any questions. They all seem to have a basic command of German and English along with French.

Spa

Apparently guests do not have free access to the spa, which I thought was an elite member right. Or was this a Starwood thing? I did not even try to access.

I am including the price list for those that might be interested.

Gym

The gym is alternative, I guess it is going for the natural look. I found it a bit too basic.

Getting to the Parking

As this screenshot shows, my friends had a very difficult time trying to get to the hotel's parking.

DE3A2120-215F-40CB-B62E-7D1F97AAA522.jpeg

When you reserve a spot the hotel will send you a PDF file describing with pictures on how to get to the hotel parking. You WILL need this, which looks like this:

FD8332A6-B921-4C0A-B566-2195BC280FEA.jpeg

Plus they will send you the code that is required to get through the different access points.

The cost is 40 EUR per night.

The hotel only has about 6-7 parking spots, so you should definitely reserve.

Other public parking garages in the area cost 20 EUR or up to 44 EUR per 24 hour period.

Service

The service was overall excellent. I loved especially how responsive Norman and Benoit were both at the desk and on in-app messaging.

The concierge was also very bubbly and wanted to share his knowledge about the city!
