Check In
I arrived early evening off a flight from Frankfurt, and the check in was very welcoming. The staff member was engaging, friendly and keen to let me know all about my rate - I wish more did this! You have to put your luggage through a security scanner to get into the hotel, and show your COVID pass - the NHS one was accepted freely. I was amazed as I walked through the foyer of the hotel - it has a very old world grand feel. It may not be the most modern or in the funkiest location but it is a lovely hotel if you just want to stay on the property and relax.
Room
I had been upgraded to a sea view as I had booked through Hyatt Privee - I also got $100 room credit, a bottle of wine as a welcome gift and breakfast included and the rate was not much more than the normal rate on the Hyatt website - well worth it in my opinion.
My room had a large bed whcih was very comfortable. The view was over the hotel grounds out to the water and was really lovely in the evening. I also had a balcony and while it was a bit hot to stay out for long, it was a nice place to have a glass of wine and look at the skyline.
I had to move the bedside table to plug my phones in which shows this is not the most modern hotel, however I did it fine and it caused no issues. Otherwise the room was well equipped with a fridge to put your own stuff in, a TV (never switched it on!) and desk and a chair and footstool.
The bathroom was huge and had a separate bathtub and shower. There was also a door that separated the toilet from the rest of the bathroom if you like your privacy! The sink had plenty of space around it too and the hairdryer was of a good quality. The aminities were all Grand Hyatt branded - nothing special but OK to use!
Service
This is where the hotel really outshone its competitors in my opinion. I have stayed at the IC, Doubletree and W in Doha and this place won by a mile. I could not fault the service from check in to check out. The restaurant staff were all friendly and helpful, the spa staff were knowledgable, and whenever I recognised a face, they stopped to chat to see how my stay was going. I really could not fault the service and is actually why I would return despite this not being the most modern of hotels.
Dining
I ate breakfast in the Santa Monica Breakfast CLub each morning where the spread was good. Nothing terribly fancy but enough to keep you going - it did have a great selection of egg dishes, bigger than I have seen in other places.
Dune bar was lovely - you have to look hard to find it but dont be put off by the burley security man at the entrance... it has a really relaxed vibe and was a great place to spend their happy hour. Music is quite dance orientated so I understand it may not be for everyone - think a cross between a sports bar and an Ibiza bar but I loved it. The pother thing across the restaurants is the house wine is of good standard - the Sauv Blanc was really nice.
I ate in the Thai restaurant - Issan - what a delight. The food was great and it had an open plan layout so you could watch the chefs in action. It was obviously popular with the expat community and the day I went was curry night which seemed pretty good value!
Location
It is about 30 mins from the airport by car - so not really in the centre of things, albeit there is a Galleries Layfeyette Mall next door should you wish to do some shopping. I didnt mind it though as I had no plans to leave the property but you may want to think if it will suit you depending on your plans for your stay.
Overall
Overall I loved it. It is not super modern, but has a sophisticated feel to it and the staff are brilliant. There was enough to do on the property for me so I was happy. I will definitely return - this is now my go to place in Doha.
