- Deluxe King Room
This was my first ever stay at an EDITION hotel--which isn't that surprising, considering there are only 4 propeeties worldwide as of now!
i originally had planned to spend the night as my 4th and final night in Paris at the Prince de Galles hotel. But the French Air Traffic Control strike planned for the day of my departure changed my plans, as I had a connection in London for my international flight back to the USA. So I took the EuroStar train from Paris to London and stayed at the EDITION to not risk my international flight.
i was quite struck at how truly W-esque the design and aesthetic is for this London EDITION. The bar scene in the lobby. The pretty staff. The pretty property hanging about. The dark vibe and low lighting. And the minimal decor in the room and bath. Totally like a W.
Check In
Check in was quick and easy. I had expected/hope for an upgrade to an available Loft Room or perhaps even Loft Suite as I was Platinum and only there for a night, but I was given only a single category upgrade to a deluxe king room (from a queen). No big deal since I was only there for a night--but I wasn't impressed with the Marriott Plat treatment.
Room
The room was minimal and simple, yet comfortable and easy.
The dak wood was a bit dreary for my tastes, but to each, their own. As dark as the bedroom was, the bathroom was a bit too sterile and monotone to me. The picture of the woman was creepy, though,
The air con worked great. I'm a tough customer, but it worked very well, cooling down to 18 C in a short time!
The wifi internet did not work well at all. Speeds wavered between 1-5 Mbps, which is pretty bad for a luxury level hotel. I called and asked and learned that 5 Mbps is the standard speed. Not impressive.
The other biggest problem with the room was that the blackout shades didn't work in one window:
As opposed to the other window where they worked perfectly:
Maintenance/housekeeping should have noticed the problem with the one window shade; that was disappointing on a 1 night stay.
Service
Service was excellent. This was the standout feature that I clearly noticed, even as short as my stay her was. The fact that I had jus come from the Prince de Galles in Paris, the Hotel Imperial in Vienna, and the St Regis in Rome before this stay made it even more obvious how good the service here was.
from the bellman offering to carry my bags, to the staff member who walked me to the reception desk, to the front desk reception agent, to the guy who walked me to my room, to the room service delivery person, to the operator who told me about the wifi speeds, everyone was extremely friendly, helpful, and aiming to please. A great team and obvious great training and management. W hotels in N. America could learn a thing or two from EDITION service, I think.
Dining
I had excellent room service for both dinner after arrival and breakfast before departing. Both were excellent--and none nearly as expensive as I'd expected. All in all, I was very impressed. The curry bowl for dinner was absolutely delicious. I could eat that many times a week!
Location
Location was great for me--a 10 min taxi drive from the Pancras train station. And a mere 5 min walk over to the Oxford Circus tube stop or 15 min taxi ride to Padidngton station to get the Heahrow Express to Heathrow.
Overall
I liked the EDITION. It's better than the W London and seemed livelier than some of the more staid hotels at which I've previously stayed closer to Hyde Park Corner or Piccadilly. I'd stay again if I were traveling alone. Note as sure if I'd stay here with my husband, though.
