J.K. Place Roma (Rome):
-Booked through Virtuoso
-Room: Master Suite
-3 night stay

Summary

Great location, stunning dcor and furnishings, as with other JKs, feels like a large home. Wonderful breakfast and great drinks and complimentary snacks/desserts with your cocktails. Rooms are smaller - must get a Master Suite or JK Master Suite if you want space. Staff is very eager, yet still needs additional training. Felt that they were rushing around a lot and service generally didnt feel as natural as JK Florence. Always love how the minibar (drinks and snacks) are all complimentary.

Room

We stayed in a Master Suite (#20) and loved the dcor and finishes. While not a huge suite (none of them are at any JK, but we knew this ahead of time), it still was spacious enough for our stay. Note this is the 2nd largest suite at the property with The JK Master Suite being the only larger suite at the property. As you can see from the pictures/video, it feels like a residential apartment. And very high ceilings. There is also a large walk-in closet (cant really tell from the video) and then another large storage wardrobe across from the bar area. The bathroom is just stunning. Full slabs of marble on the walls, the floorboards, chair rail marble everywhere. The shower can easily fit six people and had great pressure from the rainhead as well as the handheld. The toilet area is separated and has unique touches such as the plunger and the toilet paper hidden in the wall behind chrome doors that open. The desk fits beautifully with the dcor and I heard all the pieces were custom made for the hotel itself.

Dining

While it seems the food at this property may have disappointed others on this forum in the past when it first opened, I can honestly say that the food was perfectly fine. And we live in NYC and are fairly harsh critics. The breakfast I thought was very fresh and varied. They set up various stations throughout the restaurant (fruit, bread, yogurt, juices, pastries, etc) and you can help yourself. You can also order hot items made to order and I must say the eggs and sausage were some of the best that I have tasted in some time. One night we were tired and just wanted to relax and decided to go to the bar area and order a few small items and some wine/cocktails. This was perfect. With drinks, they always serve complimentary snacks as well as a tray of desserts (think macarons, chocolates, etc). Once our waiter knew we were going to order some food, he proactively said why dont I set the dessert aside for you and bring it after your meal a nice touch. The food we ordered was great. The next night we actually ate at the restaurant area as well and enjoyed the food again. Pastas were definitely better than one of the two entrees we had, but again the food was totally above par.

Other places we ate in Rome were Felice (a must visit local casual restaurant filled with almost all locals and inexpensive some of the best cacio e pepe I have had in my life). And Da Bolognese a scene that lives up to the hype. We really wanted to try Marzapane, but unfortunately they were closed for the summer holidays.

Gym/Spa

While there is no Gym yet on-site, guests can use the Hotel de Russies gym (7-10 minutes walk). While speaking with the GM, Samuel, I learned the property has plans to construct a gym area. And rather than doing a spa/gym, they will just be doing a much larger gym area, which I think is smart. Of course, one can go running in the nearby Villa Borghese park, which we did one morning.

Other

For those who like smaller, boutique type hotels, J.K. Roma definitely hits the spot. This property does have a larger lobby area compared with other JKs, a very nice library with many interesting books, and then the bar and restaurant area. We were considering the Portrait Suites and J.K. Roma, but Portrait Suites were a few hundred euro more per night for a comparable suite. While others swear by the Hotel de Russie or the Hassler, the J.K. Roma is more our style.

While the hard product is excellent, as is the location, it seems with time this property will work out any kinks and be top notch. It already is getting there (as it seems they have worked out any food issues). Service in the restaurant and bar area was great and polished. Breakfast service was a bit less polished as they seem to have a young staff working that shift. The service with the various front desk staff (who act as concierge, front desk, jack of all trades) is hit or miss. Some are extremely diligent, while others are still young and in training. Since service makes or breaks a luxury hotel stay, I feel this is the one area they should focus on. It is by no means bad, but just not up to the standard that I expect from a world-class property. But they are all willing to try. One example is the morning we went for a run to the Villa Borghese park while rain was in the forecast, we still went. Sure enough a few minutes after we started our run, it started raining. Given the beautiful backdrop, we continued on our run. We were soaked and when we returned to the hotel, they neither offered any water as is so common in luxury hotels after a run, nor did they offer to get us a towel given we were drenched. What really would have been great is if they had towels waiting for us, given they knew we were going for a run outside and they knew it started raining. That would have been true, anticipatory service.
