The Xiamen Holiday Inn Express Airport Zone is a budget choice near Xiamen Gaoqi Airport. The drive from the airport takes roughly 5 minutes from Terminal 3, and about 10 minutes from Terminal 4.

It is located in a development zone, so it is quite remote to anything but the airport. Missing of restaurant choices needs to be considered, when checking in there.

Otherwise it is a very good hotel, consider Holiday Inn Express is a budget chain.

I was there in February 2019, and it was quite new then. Thus you could still smell moist concrete in the hallways and also a bit when entering the rooms.

Check In

The check in was very efficient, even the registration as a foreigner in a hotel in China was fast. I was able to choose some canned drinks as my IHG status welcome gift from the fridge.

Room

I chose a King Deluxe Sea View Room, which gave view over the Harbour towards the mainland. The room was very spacious compared to other Holiday Inn Express I experienced before.

The King bed was large enough and comfortable. Pillow selection was the standard Holiday Inn Express selection with two soft and two firm pillow.

There was an extra Sofa in front of the TV, which was quite nice.

Bathroom was one of those standard modular Holiday Inn Express bathrooms, where the Door serves as bathroom door or shower door.

Despite it was a non-smoking room, an ashtray and matches were offered. But since it was really new, I couldn't smell anything but a slight moist concrete smell, which I did not notice after a while. The smell in the room was not as strong as on the hallways.

Service

WiFi was typical China WiFi - fast for domestic service, pretty awful for international connections. They also offered a washing machine service, but for one night I did not have to use that.

Dining

I did not bother to check whether they offer dinner, but had the included breakfast in the morning. The breakfast was a basic breakfast, which also suited Westeners. Where you normally only find toast in a Holiday Inn Express, they also had fruits and cereals.

Most impressed I was, that they had Jura coffee machine. That was absolutely unexpected.

Location

Despite being close to the airport, the location is very remote. Since I was arriving from another city the day I checked in, I did not need an airport shuttle. On the website I cannot find an offer for a airport shuttle, so you probably have to arrange a taxi.

Even for restaurants around, the location is very poor. There are not so many choices, only some basic Chinese restaurants and a convenience store. I wouldn't want to blame that on the hotel, since the area is all newly developed. But it is worth noting, if you check-in there for a night between flights.

Overall

Overall I was positively surprised. I had to book short notice, and budget policies, availability and proximity to the airport made the Xiamen Holiday Inn Express Airport Zone my choice.

I was positively surprised, I stayed in worse Holiday Inn or even Crowne Plazas already - so it is definitely one of the better Holiday Inn Express hotels.

The location is poor, so to have a nice dinner you need to go into the city. The smell was because it was new, should fade over time. But I hope they enforce a their non-smoking policy, to not have non-smoking rooms turned into ashtrays.
