I stayed at Hampton Inn YVR for the first time recently.  In the past, I stayed at Sheraton YVR instead, but points redemptions are no longer a bargain after increases from 4k Starpoints per night to 7k points per night to now 10k pts per night.  The points required at Four Points or Westin are not any better, and the Marriott even more.  I recently had to book a last minute overnight in YVR and cash rates were high everywhere so I booked Hampton Inn YVR for 30k points which was more reasonable than other options from Marriott or Starwood.  The other choice was the Hilton for 40k points, but I did not need anything fancy so I picked the Hampton Inn and saved 10k points.

Room

The hotel is going through renovations and there is a sign near reception to alert guests to apologize for the ongoing work.  On my floor you could see the area near the elevator being worked on.  However I got a fully renovated room on the top floor (5th floor), which was well done.  The bathroom is bright, clean, and modern.  The shower with sliding glass door is nice and I much rather have it than to take a shower in a bathtub with curtains which I get at neighboring properties.  The water pressure in the shower was good.  The bedroom is a bit small, particularly if you have two double beds, but the bed was comfortable and I slept well.  The AC is an old-style wall unit and controls are on the unit itself (not electronic controls on the wall) so that part was not renovated.  However it is April so AC was a non-issue for me.  There are power plugs between the beds to recharge electronics.  The furniture is ok, and overall the room is quite nice; I had no complaints.

I did not hear any noise from renovations work during the afternoon or during the night.  I am not sure which floors at being worked on at the moment, but at least the 2nd floor is.  I went there on my way to the gym and it’s a complete construction zone as you can see from the pictures.  All room doors are open and you get see the construction inside.

Gym

The gym is ok.  There is only one treadmill, one elliptical, and one bike.  At least they are modern and work well.  However there are no free weights which is disappointing.

Location

The location is good if you want to stay close to the airport.  The shuttle bus picked me up from the airport 10 minutes after I called.  In the morning you need to book a spot from their shuttle schedule and they picked me up on time.  There are a few restaurants walking distance to the hotel.

Dining

Because I had an early morning flight, I did not have breakfast in the hotel because I knew I would eat on the plane.  Just glancing at what they had available, it seemed to be good standard for a Hampton Inn.

Overall

If I compare with the Sheraton or Marriott Vancouver Airport which I have been to in the past, the Hampton Inn is a notch below because it’s not a full service hotel, but to be honest it’s not like other properties are fantastic to begin with so if you are just there for an overnight, in my humble opinion the Hampton Inn is just fine.  In terms of the quality of the room, I did not find the step down from Sheraton to be much if at all, given the renovations, so I will return if the price is right.
