I had another stay here a few nights ago. This time I was put in a different room type, so I wanted to provide a review of this room. The standard of service was the same as usual, so I will not go into that, and mostly just provide a review off the room.

Check In

Check in was efficient, as always. I was clearly expected. For some reason, there was some difficulty getting the chip on my Visa card to work for the preauthorisation, but simply switching to a different terminal worked. We were not given drink vouchers, however at this hotel they are only good for soft drink, juice, tea and coffee, so we did not mention anything about it.

Room

We received a one category upgrade from a Superior Room to a Junior Suite. As with most other Junior Suites anywhere, it is a large single room with a sofa completing the living area. The TV swivels to face either the sofa or the bed and has easy access to USB and HDMI ports on it – fantastic if you bring your own movies to watch. The working desk is a bit small. Two 600ml water bottles are provided free of charge.

The bed is very comfortable. Feather and foam pillows are provided and there is also a pillow menu available. The lavender pillow we ordered did not really smell very strong, it was probably an older one, but still very comfortable.

The bathroom has a separate bath, large bench space and a huge shower. Amenities are Grand Mercure branded. These are a bit disappointing and the shower gel does not really lather well, which makes it necessary to ration it a bit when sharing one small bottle between two people. I have previously mentioned that the shower in other rooms have a bad 'drain smell' after use, but this was not apparent after using the shower in this room.

Service

I did receive a phone call at about 2pm and they said, “Mr. Maelstrom, your check out date is today.” I had organised a 3pm check out with the front office manager prior to my arrival and had confirmed it upon arrival, so I was a little annoyed by this phone call.

Service in the restaurant is good and friendly. The managers all speak English.

Overall

As stated in the previous review, the location is not too great for downtown access. Jinan’s first metro line has (finally) opened, so perhaps in a few years there will be metro access near to the hotel. In my conversations with the general manager, the hotel will be undergoing a refurbishment in the next two years (the hotel is currently eight years old).

We always have a pleasant stay at this hotel, as the location is not a huge deterrent for us. However, if frequent access to the downtown area is required, consider the Sofitel instead. Just be aware that the credit card terminals do charge DCC by default, which I believe the hotel is remedying, but I would recommend having alternative payment methods available if they do still try to sling you with it.
