Check In
After a disastorous stay at The Churchill where we had to leave mid stay, I rang GSY on a Sunday evening and explained the situation. Mihai, the Front Office Manager who answered the call empathised and offered to upgrade us as a Glob to the Premium Sherlock Holmes Suite and he would have the room ready in 20 mins. This level of exceptional service was indicative of how our stay at GSY would be.
We called an Uber and arrived at the hotel. Immediately as you arrive you are struck by the stunning interior that blends the history of the property with modern artwork to give it its unique character. Much of the art are pieces made by Prisoners.
Two delightful young women on front desk welcomed us warmly, they were expecting us. They were genuinely excited for us to experience the GSY and spent 20 mins talking to us. They assured us that we would be looked after. They explained the history of the hotel as the former Metropolitan Police HQ and the former residence of the Scottish Royal Family. They showed us that the artwork featured former staff, their signatures and artefacts from the hotel's history. They also have us 2 Cocktail vouchers for the bar.
Room
We went to the room and the first impression was the beautiful deep Blue doors. The suite featured a separate living and bedroom (unlike the Regency Suite at the Churchill) and a very large bathroom with dual sinks, shower and bathtub.
Every single aspect of the room and hotel had little touches that blended modern design with the history of the property that truly make it unique.
We were further impressed that the entire mini bar was comped, including mini bottles of Vueve replenished daily.
Service
The service was simply outstanding. Every staff member we engaged with was genuinely proud to work there and excited to look after us.
Dining
We visited the 40 Elephants Bar on the first night for some cocktails and even these have been named after in(famous) people associated with the property. The bartenders are young, yet their knowledge of drinks was worthy of a fine dining Sommelier. The hotel also has a Whiskey bar.
Breakfast was of a high quality as well as the Barista made coffee. There was an extensive buffet selection as well as an A la carte menu.
We had friends over for lunch at The Parlour for the traditional Fish and Chips and it did not disappoint. We found ourselves in the middle of a Doggy Afternoon Tea that was adorable.
Location
The first morning we walked out of the hotel and around the corner we found ourselves at Trafalgar Square. We were able to walk down to The Eye, Westminster and to Buckingham Palace where we caught the Changing of the Guard.
I had no idea we were in such close proximity to the sights and it meant we could do a great tour of London on foot.
Overall
Overall, GSY is an exceptional property. I truly believe that a GM shapes a hotel and service comes from the top and it is clear that Sholto Smith, former GM of the PH MEL, has once again built a great hotel with a wonderful team.
Unbound by Hyatt has become my favourite brand in the chain. We love the Hotel Martinez and just visited Magma Resort in Santorini. These unique properties have their own distinct flavour that provide memorable experiences.
Not only is the GSY the best Hyatt property in London, but the stay exceed our last London stay at the Rosewood. I look forward to it being our new home in London.
