Stats

I spend a relaxing long week-end in Madrid last week. I wanted to try one of the Hilton option in the city and I was attracted by the Atocha Hotel, the first Tapestry in Europe, opened brand new the first week of June. This was a particularly good choice.

At the time of booking, the room rate was sub 100 EUR for standard rooms and 108 EUR for a Superior Room, which is the category I booked. This was very cheap and proved a good idea as a few days before arriving, I checked the prices for the same date and they were around 150 EUR now.

They do have a lot of room types, so we will need experience to see what people get as upgrades. Also they do have "unique" room like a fitness room so unsure where they would be in the order. I booked a superior room and was upgraded to a King Junior Supreme, basically a Junior Suite.

The room categories are:

- King Guest Room

- King Superior Room

- King Junior Supreme

- El Atocha Penthouse

Unique rooms:

- Kind Deluxe Room

- King One Bedroom Supreme

- King Five Feet to Fitness

Check In

Check-in was efficient and professional, I was welcomed as a Diamond member and given keys, a drink voucher and explain the hotel facilities. They also explained me they can book tickets to museum if necessary.

The room was spacious, modern and very comfortable in general. The bed was comfortable, quite similar to the bed I had in Waldorf Astoria. The sofa was high and quite comfy too. The only design default is that weird concrete pillar near the bed. The pictures were taken while drapes are openh and you can see the low luminosity but in general, the room does not get brighter than that. It is oriented towards a courtyard so there are shadows most of the time. The building is very well insulated and there was no need to push the AC too much, despite temperature of 28-30 deg outside.

There are lots of plugs, in various places, including USB plugs.

The shower had adequate pressure, good temperature. Amenities are from the Lab Company.  Bathrobe and slippers provided.

Fridge is available, a microwave, coffee machine and tea kettle. There is a safe.

Service

Service was a bit hit and miss. Nothing to complain about the staff at the reception, however at the breakfast this is a completely different affair. It was completely random whether or not I would get proposed eggs cooked on order or a coffee.

The breakfast buffet is good for Spain. One positive point is that the fruits are fresh (no tin can) and there is a lot of choices: apples, bananas, orange in a basket and cuts of melons, watermelons, kiwi, peaches. Cherries were there too. Cold cut are good quality.

Location

Location was perfect for my purpose: easy access to the subway and close to the Prado Museum (10 min walk). The hotel is between 2 stations of metro line 1, on Calle Atocha. Access from Atocha train station is straightforward: line 1 for 2 stations.

From MAD: line 8 then 10 change for 1 at Tribunal. Or 20 min drive according to Google Maps.

There are a lot of restaurants, bars and various shops in the vicinity, the street is lively but not too much thus not very noisy.

Overall

This is the first Tapestry in Europe and if all are of the same mould then this will be a very good brand. This hotel is perfect for a leisurely stay in Madrid, modern and high level of comfort. A very good addition to the Hilton options in the spanish capital.
