Check In
Swift and courteous. Offer of sparkling water or fancy iced tea (declined, I dislike clutching beverages during the transfer to the room). Golf-cart ride to suite where luggage was unloaded and taken to the large closet off the large bathroom.
Room
124 is a Valencia Suite, the signature level, of 1300 sq. ft. plus a truly oustanding paved and landscaped patio terrace featuring a tiled hot tub, outdoor gas fireplace, comfy outdoor seating comprising, sofa, two armchairs. coffee table, two sun loungers with side table and sun umbrella.
There is a large sign near the hot tub prohibiting surfing and boogie boarding. We were delighted by what appeared to us to be whimsy but very likely was not.
The foyer is there but empty, a sideboard would have been useful. There is a wetbar next to the foyer with a nespresso, sink, cubboards. Also an adjacent table perfect for two to dine.
The comfortable living room is down two steps (be careful!) with large sofa (queen bed), so large chairs, another sideboard containing small fridge with gratis non-alcoholic beverages plus gratis snacks. Nice touch. French doors out to the terrace.
Large, delightful bathroom with double sinks, deep bath tub, large glass shower with easy-to-manage controls and the now-de-rigeur rain shower head. Large planter container two orchids in full bloom -- so very lovely. Wonderful lotions, potions and so on. Private toilet alcove with door, TOTO toilet. Large closet adjoining bathroom, lots of drawers, stands, hanger space, safe, etc.
Service
Service was top-of-the-line everytime and very kindly, unforced. Attention to detail among the best I have encountered. Room service was swift and exceptional, both in the (limited choices if one stays longer than three days) cuisine and in the excellent service. Service in the delightful spa was a treat.
Dining
Room service was very good although choices were limited for a longer stay as was ours.
Location
Within the many-acre, lusciously gardened resort, all is perfection. The Rancho Santa Fe locale is a tres upscale suburb of San Diego about half an hour from the airport in an area replete with country clubs, golfcourses and stables. Tennis is a big deal at the resort itself, ten or more courts.
Overall
Returning for four nights over Christmas. Great for a romantic respite. If you can confine your stay to weekdays, that is best. Weekends are Wedding Central. Soa is fabulous. Many more health and exercise ootions than most other resorts. The garden setting is exquisite.
