Check In

Our decision to visit Amangiri happened quite late, so that the Amangiri Suite was the only room available when we checked online. But through our travel agent, we could eventually get a standard suite which we booked immediately. IT got really tricky when we were trying to reach the Amangiri, since neither of our two navigation systems had ever heard of it. Even on the hotel's website we found only a rather useless map. In the end we had to enter Lake Powell into our navigation system with the hopes of finding a sign of the hotel on the way.

Finally, we arrived. To get onto the premises of the Amangiri we had to ring the bell at a gate and were then granted entrance. Via a long winding road we drove past beautiful stone formations to the hotel where we were already expected by several members of the staff, including the general manager. After a short tour of the hotel, we were taken to our room.

Room

The rooms in the Amangiri are all more or less the same, their only distinguishing feature is their location and if they have a pool or terrace.

The design of the room is quite spare and maybe even cold, since it is dominated by beige concrete - the walls, floor and even the frame of the bed and the sofa. But it fit its surroundings perfectly. Apparently the Aman used a local architect to design the hotel. The hotel blends in great into its surroudings.

The most prominent feature of the hotel is its pool. It's U-shaped and in its middle a huge rock rises up. Even though the pool is spectacular, we didn't appreciate that it bordered onto the terrace of the restaurant, so that people who were having lunch or dinner or even just drinks were watching you swim.

The best thing was definitely the landscape. The hotel offers guided tours around the property, for example to a cave that was used by Native Americans and where you can still find old cave paintings. There are several trails on the property. You can, for example, hike to a small slot canyon.

Dining

We weren't too impressed about the food. The positive: they had a vegetarian menu. But neither the food from the "normal" menu nor the one from the vegetarian menu could convince. One dish had seen way too much salt, and a fish we had was too dry. Overall the food was bordering on bland. Considering that you pretty much have no choice but to eat in the restaurant (or order room service which comes from the same restaurant), the lack of tastiness of the provided food can become a huge problem, especially if you're staying for a longer time. The menu isn't very big, so you'll have to eat the same thing at least twice if you're staying for four or five nights, especially since the lunch menu and the dinner menu are almost the same.

Overall

The location of the Aman is its huge plus and there isn't really an alternative in the region, so we wouldn't mind staying there again. Hopefully the food will have improved by then. Even if the service was very good and we really liked the design, we weren't blown away.
