Deluxe 2-Bdr Exec Suite

There are not many hotels in Bangkok which can provide both 5-star full service and also have 2-bedroom apartment style or residences.  We stayed at Akyra Thonglor in the past and knew that it would meet our needs with a newborn baby in tow.  Akyra continues to be much cheaper to book directly or via SLH, instead of Hyatt and this is what I did this year again.  The value for the money when booking a 2-bedroom suite outright is more questionable than when we stayed in the past because it caps the potential upgrades for elites of the SLH loyalty program, but in the end the hotel made it up for it in other ways so we were pleased with our stay.

Room

SLH has not discounted its prices during covid nearly as much as other hotel chains.  I booked a pre-paid rate several months in advance during the Christmas sale and I paid with SLH gift cards bought with 20% bonus almost one year ago so the net price tag could probably not have been much lower, nonetheless it was still double the price of what I paid at Marriott Surawongse (our hotel immediately before Akyra), also for a 2-bedroom apartment.

When I made my booking at Akyra I hoped that I would receive an upgrade to the 2-bdr suite with a large terrace outside (the room type from my review last year).  Unfortunately between the time I made my reservation and the time of our stay, they shuffled the room types.  In their mind, they upgraded me to a deluxe based on the new naming convention, but it was essentially the room type I booked because it did not have the balcony; based on the new names the deluxe label was for the renovated rooms.  The room was fine but for the price tag I thought it was quite a bit to pay and hard for Akyra to compete given the numerous fantastic deals in Bangkok at the moment.  Unfortunately the suites with balconies were fully booked during our long(ish) stay because occupancy at Akyra is not as low as some other hotels – they have a good number of long-term guests in-house.  So it’s not that the upgrade was stingy and lack of willingness on the hotel’s part, but more than room types were fully booked which I verified myself online.

When I mentioned that without a material upgrade the value was questionable given what we can find in the city, the hotel did the best they could in the circumstances: they provided the room next door at no extra charge (once our neighbor checked out) so we had an extra room for 9 nights out of our 13 night stay.  They thought it would help provide some extra space if my wife or I needed a spot to rest alone after taking care of the baby which can get hectic at times.  This was a great gesture and it turned out even more valuable than the hotel would have imagined because my wife had a special nurse coming to the hotel 7 consecutive days for 5 hours per day for some kind of post-pregnancy treatment so they used the room for that while I could stay in the main room with our daughter.

Dining

Breakfast was largely the same as in my review last year, and it was still possible to have it in the room in part because of covid restrictions.  I think soon the breakfast will be offered in the restaurant only once the situation normalizes.  The only difference I noticed in the menu is that avocado toasts were no longer a choice, and mangoes were not available either.

Service

Service at the hotel continues to be 5-star which was one of the reasons I booked there, instead of the limited service executive apartments by large hotel chains.  They were quite responsive to my numerous requests during our stay including several printing jobs brought to the room and always cleaning the room promptly, exactly at the time I requested.  I would also note the welcome gift for our daughter which was a nice touch and highly appreciated.  They also provided their hotel mini-van for local transportation after check-out for free, which was also another nice extra they did for us.  Last but not least, at check-out we missed saying goodbye to the front office manager because she was busy but she went out of her way to proactively call me in my room at Kimpton Maa-Lai Hotel after we left Akyra to ask if the transfer had been smooth and to ensure we were happy overall with our stay at Akyra.

Overall

Overall I can continue to recommend Akyra Thonglor.  For best value I think booking one of the lower room types makes more sense because they have limited availability for the 2-bedroom suites especially those with balconies which are few and far between in the hotel.
