Go Fast - tax is calculated from original price?

[update] - never mind, the tax was the total for 4 nights. Still a bit steep but much more reasonable.

I love that a $180 room is available for 3k pts + $35 cash, but the tax is pricing out at $30, almost as much as the cash portion! I have to imagine it is based on the original price of $180. Is this by design or a mistake? This is at the Ramada Khao Lak.

I don't know for sure. But many hotel taxes are unavoidable, and really depend on the location. States and cities charges special hospitality taxes that hotels have to pay for anyone staying there (which goes towards promoting tourism and policing and all that jazz). So the tax would be that much no matter which hotel you stayed at in the same municipality.
