Any requests from France
 

Because I am insane, I am going to France the 27th for a meeting on the 30th and I am bringing my 10 year old nephew ( hence the insanity). We return the 2nd. I have a colleague's 23 year old daughter escorting him while I am in meetings.

I have two questions
1. is 100 Euro enough to pay her for the day ( plus expenses of course). He is very mature and likes history and wants to try new foods etc.
2. Do any of you need any French speciality items ( of a reasonable size, I am not bringing back Louis IX furniture :-) )? Soap, hair spray etc? There are a couple of French products that I adore so I am happy to bring back any specialty items others might need.

SkiAdCOCK- Is there anything that your sister might like??

How cool of you to do this for your nephew. I'm not sure about the money, but that sounds good to me, especially if you are fronting food and fares for the both of them.

I'd recommend you get:

Soap (even the cheap stuff in France from Monoprix is decent)
Labello lip balm
Herbes de Provence (way cheaper in France compared to US)

If your nephew likes history, he should go to the Musee Carnavalet, the museum of the history of the city of Paris. It has great scale models of what city neighbourhoods looked like at different periods in history. It's a small museum in/near the Marais, so easy to fit into the day. If he's interested in science and inventions, the Musee des Arts et Metiers (relatively close) is also interesting; it focuses on French inventions and industry. It's jam-packed and large, so he and his chaperone might want to move through it fairly quickly, focusing only on what interests them. Toward the end there is a stunning small (but full size, real) airplane hanging in a stairwell as well as a large gallery with part of a train, I think.

If he's an adventurous eater (and a growing boy), he might like Leon de Bruxelles for lunch. It serves mussels with excellent "all you can eat" frites. It's a chain and there are a number of locations around the city.

The Roman ruins should delight your nephew--can't think of older stones for a true history buff.

If he's really an adventurous eater the bouchons provide nose-to-tail eating. But "regular" French food is probably different enough.

I would say 100 euro is fine. That's what a guide I know charges for the day.

njvj, thanks for the offer. A postcard for Cheryl would be great. I've emailed her to find out if she wants anything small. Since she's never been to France I'm not sure there's anything she associates with it/would like to have, but I'll let you know.

I didn't attend a performance but we went to the ruins and saw huge stages, horses, it looks like it might be very interesting for a young boy.

I think 100 Euro per day is sufficient if you are paying for meals and tickets.

thanks- the nghts of fourviere sounds good. He broke his arm Wednesday playing soccer, so I will have a walking cast and he will have an arm cast. we are going to look like the halt and the lame. Maybe we should be going to Lourdes??
