Dry Hair - Help

Since moving to Spain, my hair has gotten really dry and fuzzy. I think it is the water. I've tried everything from extra conditioning to hair masks.

Does anyone have a cure for super dry hair?

Hi Redhead

Same thing happened to me. I also find that the water affects my skin, making it dry out. I think the problem is the "cal"(we had the water tested and were told this) in the water.

Unfortunately, I have no suggestions.

Dani

Hi, Redhead,
If you have access to Kiehl's, then I would recommend this new product, Amino acid shampoo. It has done wonders for my hair.
I am going to try and post a link to this product. Hope it works. http://www.kiehls.com/Default.aspx?p...=7&st=253&cc=7 They do say on the website that they don't ship outside of the U.S. Perhaps, Sephora?

I don't have the dry hair problem, but I'll second Khiel's as a good place for hair stuff.

Khiels has a store in London now, so you can get them to ship it to you.

If you are truly interested in this product, email me and I'll scootch down to my local mall (grrrr) and pick you up a sample pak or three. Nice to have a Khiels within .3 miles of your house, not nice to have the traffic.

Thanks. IŽll have to try Kiehls. I'll have it shipped to my brother's place and pick it up when I am there over the Xmas holidays.

Any other hints?

You may also try Garnier Fructis, it's certainly a cheaper option than Kiehl's (although I adore Kiehl's stuff). While I personally haven't tried it, I've been told that the fruit acids in it work wonders on the hair. I know it's available in London, and it's a European brand, so maybe it's available where you are?

Lala, I am SO excited to hear that there's a Kiehl's store in London now!! Just in time for my move! http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif Where is it?

Buster--
The store is near neal's yard, but I can't remember what street exactly.

Remember, everything is the exact price as it is in the states, just well, in GBP. You would be better off buying in the states and having it shipped.

when I lived in Saudi my hair was always dry. I used to get a really rich hair mask and slather it on my dry hair. Then I would use a shower cap and sleep with the stuff in my hair. Next morning just rinsed it out in the shower. Had great hair for a week or more.

Also if your hair is really dry don't shampoo everyday if you can get away with it. Just rinse it in the shower with no shampoo. This helps some.

MoreMilesPlease gives excellent advice here, which I'd like to expand on; hope this helps.

I strongly agree with the "not shampooing but just rinsing when possible" advice, and many hair stylists will tell you the same thing. Your natural oils help your hair out a lot, and are banished by over-washing.
But maybe, like me, you work out frequently, and therefore shower more often than the average bear (in said problematic Spanish over-chem'ed water). If you're not doing anything strenuous, you can probabaly wait 2-3 days before you shampoo, and just rinse...But if you've gotten really sweaty, it's hard to just rinse that hair, not WASH it.

So here's my first idea: there's a plain old drugstore (read "cheap") shampoo in the U.S. - not sure about availablilty there, but I guess online anything is orderable - called TRESemme Hydrology Shampoo for Dry/Damaged Hair. Here it costs something like three bucks. I never tried to put a link in before, hope this works: http://shop.store.yahoo.com/physlabs/061671.html#

I have used this product when my hair, which is dry to begin with, is even MORE dry, like after I've taken a trip to the desert, or been swimming a lot in heavily chlorinated pools. I've found that it sticks so much moisture back in my hair that conditioner would be just insane overkill.

But! if you do want to go for a conditioner also, Aveda makes one called "Elixir" that you leave in after you shampoo. You just rub/comb a small amount completely through your hair when it's still damp...this is what I use on a semi-daily basis, unless I've had to pull out the big guns with that hydrating shampoo. It's not heavy, visible, or tactile in your hair (say, like a gel would be) so, if you have a a curl or a wave to your hair, it will not eliminate/flatten it, or feel icky and stiff when your S.O. puts a hand through it. It has a pleasant, neutral semi-floral smell.

Lastly! If you want to go for the above-mentioned "really rich hair mask" to slather on and sleep in overnight with a shower cap, I would send you straight to a product called K-Pak Deep-Penetrating Reconstructor--(subtitled "For damaged hair") You could certainly try the overnight method, but what my friends and I have done when we've used it (this is in N. California), is applied it freely through damp hair out of the shower and then gone about our day's errands on the weekend...and then rinsed it out after a couple of hours, with splendid results. However I must report that it smells like Coppertone suntan lotion -- Coconuts seem to be breaking and oozing over your head.

And come to think of it, if the water is chiefly to blame: Are you renting or do you own your home? Is putting in a water filtration system an option??

Redhead Oct 14, 2003 6:02 am

I rent so not worth putting in water purification system and I've started washing my hair only every other day unless I've had a heavy work-out.

Will try both the overnight thing and check out the other brands. It's driving me nuts since I look like I've stuck my finger in a light socket.

Thanks for all the hints!

best remedy for dry hair I have found..

Burt's bees baby oil - use as an after shampoo treatment, just a little bit worked well into the hair. not greasy, hypoallergenic - the best!

According to the Kiehls website ( www.kiehls.com ), their products are available in Madrid at:

Elena Benarroch
C/ Jose Ortega Y Gasset 14
Madrid 28006
34-91-435-5144

I have never used Kiehls products (yet), but found this info and figured I would pass it on!

Mayonnaise or olive oil make a nice "mask" for the hair. I slather on, then wrap my head with plastic wrap and keep the whole thing on until my scalp gets warm (hence pores, follicles opening), usually 20 - 30 minutes. Shampoo well. Shampoos themselves can be very drying - I order mine by the gallon by mail, haven't a suggestion for Spain. Vinegar or lemon juice rinses restore the Ph balance and I find help.

Agree with SylviaCaras - When my hair is really dry I use real (not the miracle whip stuff) mayonnaise and mash avocado into it until smooth - put a wrapping of syranwrap over head and and a shower cap over that.

Go to bed (with a towel on pillow just in case)- wash in the am - very conditioning.

KathyWdrf Oct 17, 2003 4:50 pm

Somehow, the idea of putting edible stuff like mayonnaise and avocado on my hair, though it may WORK, just seems really disgusting to me....

But, to each her own! http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/wink.gif
