The FT Book Club!!
In the thread on good books, CozumelJen suggested starting a FT book club. All the morning TV shows are doing it so why not FT?
Jen suggested the first book be one Library Dragon enjoyed: "Steal a Pencil For Me" by Jaap Polak and Ina Soep. It's only available in hardback, so is a little pricey, but perhaps we can swap copies. I have one on its way and will be happy to share when I finish it and Library Dragon has offered to share hers when it comes back from a friend. It's all a little sketchy at this point, but for now we'll try for a book a month and have a separate thread per book for discussion. Any other suggestions are most welcome. |
Sounds like a great idea to me. I would prefer to stick to paperbacks because I hate dragging a hardback book around when I am traveling, and I basically don't even like reading hard cover books. I feel guilty when I take them to bed and fall asleep and then roll on them, but I will go with whatever.

Yes, I too like to pack light and carry only cheap paperbacks that I can leave behind. For future selections we should try to stick to paperbacks. This one came highly recommended by our resident book expert though so I think it's worth a shot.

Count me in. So, "Steal a Pencil For Me" is Julys Book??

"Book expert"? I like that http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif

I'm gonna go buy this tomorrow for the 40 plus hours of flying I'll have from 7/5 to 7/11. Ack!
I've always wanted to do a book club, but I can't make the meetings of any of the ones my friends are in. |
I don't even have to put makeup on for this one.

Where do they sell it?

Yes, sounds like this one could take us longer to get started. Here's a site I use for books. It searches most all the online book sellers and sorts them by price.
http://www.addall.com/ It looks like Barnes and Noble is the only one that has it in stock. What's everyone think ... should we start on another, more easily available book for July while we all try to find this one for August? If so, any suggestions for July? I just picked up Five Quarters of the Orange at Costco (paperback, about $7). It's by the author of Chocolat. Anyone read that? |
I think it might be easier if we start with a book that is easier to get for July, and then work on getting the other for August. But I am up for which ever you guys decide. Just let us know...I would hate to be reading the wrong book.
|
OK, just to get this going as July's already ticking by, let's make Steal a Pencil for Me the August book to give us all time to get it and swap it around.
For July, let's go with Five Quarters of the Orange by Joanne Harris. It's paperback, cheap, has gotten good reviews and looks to be in stock at most all online bookstores and was at my Costco for $7.99 or so. Any objections? None? You're such an easy group. Settled then. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif Another good thing about an online book club is we don't all have to finish the books by a certain date when we'd meet to discuss them. By discussing them on their own threads, we can just avoid clicking on those threads until we've finished the books. IOW, the discussions could go on for more than a month. |
Sounds good to me. Any excuse to go back to COSTCO. Love their cheese and wine selections. Oh, yeah, remember the book.
|
OK, I will head out on Friday to get the book.
|
Good idea. I'll buy it next time I am at Costco, which will probably bee Friday. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...orum/smile.gif
