Unhappy Cancelling fight that used expiring travel bank credits

Westjet has changed my direct flight from YYZ to YLW and back to ones with a stop over.
I used Travel Bank credits that would have expired this month to pay.
I have the option of cancelling these flights.

If I do cancel, anyone know what expiry date my new credits will have? I'm concerned they may expire on the same date as the ones I used for the purchase.

TIA, Liz

I cannot say with certainty, so I would encourage you to call.

However in my experience, I had a flight booked with travel credits, and the flight was canceled and I had to rebook. When I cancelled I noticed my new travel bank credits had an updated expiration date. However I rebooked and used up those credits so I can't say with 100% certainty that yours would do the same, but that was my experience.

I took a chance and cancelled. The phone queue was enormous.
Westjet did reset my credits to expire in 2 years.

i've cancelled recently in March and then earlier In January with both previously used/refunded Travel Bank credits. The Travel Bank credits were extended two years from the date of cancellation in both cases. The latter used a companion fare too.

The last case the Westjet system seems to have finally caught-up with this century and everything was refunded almost instantaneously including the restored Companion voucher.

Still boggles my mind not being able to get WSD refunded in under 30 days.
Anyone know the background about why its so difficult for them to refund them at the same speed they can to credit card and travel bank?

The full consolidation of WSD across the whole program requires input from the RBC credit card earnings and possibly other sources, including any credits related to airline partner programs. Different expiries also affect WSD credits. RBC only sends WestJet account credits on a monthly basis based on the credit card billing cycles (although nightly transmissions occur, as everyone has different billing dates). Overall the audit and consolidation process used to be linked to the RBC consolidation (and probably still is, but I’m not an insider anymore, so can’t say for certain).

Theoretically those with WSD that don’t have an RBC WestJet credit card could be credited right away, but the overall program is based on processes for an integrated credit system based on a monthly cycle.

WSDs used to credit back fairly quick. I've had some that were seemingly almost instant, or at least within a few days before.

I was told that now they have to be "queued" for manual processing, which given the volume of cancellations, has been taking longer than normal. I had a few that were 45+ days that I was hoping to use; thankfully they credited those for me on the phone with their Rewards department.

The B.C. Court of Appeal recently sided with WestJet and dismissed a class action lawsuit from a plaintiff who argued that travel credits are like gift cards and cannot expire.
