I booked the YHZ-LGW flight for late October, and got cancelled two days ago. Rebooked to the YHZ-YYZ-LGW instead...they rebooked me to the route that has the shortest layover in YYZ. Guess they cancelled all the YHZ-LGW non-stop routes post August 11. Maybe low demand? hm

YYZ-BOS/ORD were removed from the winter schedule in this weekend's update.

YYZ-LGW is still scheduled, but still has bookings limited.

WestJet announces domestic winter service suspensions

Today WestJet announced the first service "suspensions" that it is attributing to the strategy refocus:
  • YYZ-YFC (DH4)
  • YYZ-YYG (737)
  • YYZ-YQB (DH4)
  • YHZ-YQY (DH4)
All routes are ostensibly being "suspended" for Winter from November 15.

It appears YYZ-YYG has been added to 2023 Summer schedule, while the others remain absent - I wouldn't be surprised if they don't return.
I also note that a new twice-weekly YYC-YQB route has been added from May 2023, so YQB will still see a very limited WestJet presence.

Also, today's announcement includes this update:
This August, WestJet will release the airline’s full winter 2022/2023 schedule that will see significant sun and leisure flying investments for Eastern Canada along with capacity enhancements nationwide.

Other, not publicized, changes that have I've noticed in the system recently:
  • YHZ-YUL is ending permanently in October
  • YVR-YUL is launching next Summer
  • YVR-YFF is launching next Summer
  • YYC-LHR is going back to 4 times a week in Summer (may change once the slot allocation is published?)
  • YYC-YYG is ending permanently in September
  • YYC-YXY is ending permanently in September
  • YYC-YQG is ending permanently in September

These are surprising (YYC-YYG has been seasonal and quite popular in the summer). I thought YQG was doing well! I don’t know about YXY though. Does WS only fly to YXY from YYC (summer seasonal) or is there also YVR service?

I would question YYC to YYG, YXY and YQG are ending "permanently" - it's just not showing in the S23 schedule yet. These are consistent with connecting "east with west" and YXY is a regional route in the west. So I would be surprised if these don't come back in summer. They are all seasonal now.

Agreed. Suspending and ending permanently are two different terms. The release from Westjet uses the term suspended. Hope the suspension is just for the winter.

Hopefully Westjet’s YYC-YYG route comes back next summer. 🤞 It does seem popular.

I note that the ORD foray didn't go well for Swoop, either: Swoop Discontinues Additional US Service in July 2022

No one likes being Rouged either but it happens. Thankfully being YYC-based, this is a no-go zone for Swoop.

Why? Is there no possibility that they might Swoop/Rouge/downgrade/degrade routes that are currently WS-operated out of YYC?
