WestJet Elevation Lounge YYC

Got an e-mail from WS to tell of their new Lounge at YYC. It links to the blog. https://blog.westjet.com/flagship-lounge/?mrd=0&j_cid=email:rewards-info:flagship-lounge-20191003rimary:20191003

"You’ve rewarded us with your loyalty. Next year we’ll be rewarding you with a beautiful new lounge at Calgary International Airport (YYC).

After many months of development and design planning, we are delighted to share that construction on our flagship lounge is now underway.

The lounge will seamlessly blend contemporary interior design with refined mountain living. This custom Canadian-inspired space brings together exceptional local food and beverage, along with business amenities designed to keep travellers connected. Once complete, it will be a place for guests to work, relax, rejuvenate and collaborate in comfort and style.

This is another step in our growth as a high-value global network carrier, bringing you more premium products and services to enhance the time you spend with us.

We can’t wait to welcome our Platinum, Gold and Silver members to the lounge in late summer 2020."

So when does it open?

This guy is usually a pretty good travel writer. But, come on man, do a tiny bit of research before writing a piece. At the very least, he could have Googled a YYC terminal map.

Agreed. While its better than nothing, the current Chinook/WS lounge at YYCs A concourse looks and feels so dated - like a tired basement reno from the 1990s. And the food service in there (even the new version since WS took it over) just comes across as amateur.

I doubt WestJets new lounges will reach the level of Amexs Centurion Lounges (theyre the gold standard, IMO) since those are probably really, really expensive to operate. Still, I hope WS sends their team to some of those Centurions to see how it could be done.

I've suggested this to the folks overseeing the development. I offered to travel with them to a Centurion Lounge destination if they didn't have access in their team. Hopefully they looked into the suggestion and checked out a few of the lounges to get some inspiration.

January 10th 2021.

My professional life has been spent being affected by badly compromised schedules and budgets in Over 30 years I'm only aware of a single project in my industry that has come in both on time and on budget.

Indeed lazy. He and the others were better quite some time ago. All they do now is push credit cards, all of which keep their U.S. audiences happy. I find his quality has diminished. And more importantly, he hired Kate who might have done a better job writing the article.

I know they all often write about the WS-DL relationship and perhaps these articles will help DL flyers on WS.

Moving along to what's behind door .#3..... lol

QUOTE:

"Conclusion

The airline currently needs to pay their lounge partners for each visitor that is utilizing the lounge and these fees certainly aren’t cheap. Even if it’s just a $10 fee per passenger that adds up quickly. At the end of the day it might be cheaper to actually an own lounge facility especially at the hub in Calgary.

Westjet is starting off with this one lounge and will probably look how that works out for them. They’ll do the math later and see if it makes sense to establish additional lounges elsewhere. It’s always possible to supplement operational cost by accepting other airlines passengers or Priority Pass."

Since taking over the existing domestic lounge in YYC, they have continued to permit Priority Pass card holders to have access. I wonder if they will do the same with this new lounge?

If they follow in the footsteps of Delta that would also be an interesting move. Delta has a deal with AMEX, where there platinum card members have access to Delta lounges, but only when flying on a Delta flight.

As someone who does not have status but has an Amex Platinum with Priority Pass I would that they invite Priority Pass members into the lounge. Realistically I don't think it will happen though. I don't think they will see the benefit of it initially. They will try to keep the product exclusive to try to sell more premium seats. Maybe after some period of time when the new-ness has worn off and they look at driving more revenue through the lounge they will bring in Priority Pass or offer lounge passes to lesser fare passengers.

If they do note, pressure needs to be placed on AMEX to get a new lounge in YYC. Especially given there is the space in A that the current lounge uses as well as likely a vacant old CP lounge area at B. However given AMEX has made zero progress in getting a montreal lounge contract in place, perhaps that will not happen.

Anyone know what the plan for the old WS lounge is?

Interesting post on the YYC forum on skyscraperpage...

It says that this new WS lounge will go where the Montana’s restaurant used to be. (It just closed recently. It was located in a landside retail area, near what used to be the entrance to the domestic B gates.)

If that’s correct, it’d be kinda odd. I can’t think of many high-end lounges that don't have lots of natural light. (There are certainly some lounges that don’t - like at YEG and YWG - but those ain’t flagship locations. And at YEG, the fact that they’re on the second floor means the ‘interior windows’ kind of work — you can see outside. The Amex Centurion at IAH is also windowless, but that's more the exception for a true, high-end lounge.)

If it’s in the old Montana’s, there’s no possible way for it to have direct access to any light or views.

Sure, the old Montana’s had “sort-of” views. It had interior windows facing onto the connection corridor between the B and C concourses — so diners could look out (ie through the corridor, over the Link golf cart track, and past the moving sidewalks) and see outside. And passengers could see right into the restaurant through those same windows, too. I really, really doubt that they’d put interior windows like that on a premium/flagship lounge... having Premium customers and lounge guests on display behind glass would be awkward.

So, no natural light, and no views. If the rumoured location is correct, it’ll be a big windowless room.

Can anyone here confirm?

Could they do a two story lounge? If I remember correctly there was food court and some weird museum thing above that area.

I was told at one point the plan was to move to a single combined security point for A, B and C.
