WestJet introduces 'Preferred' seating

While official word in the form of a press release isn't out yet it seems WestJet is fallowing other airline's and as 5th Dec. has created Preferred seats on their aircraft so will have 3 kinds of advance seats available for purchase:

Preferred seats
Exit row seats
Standard seats

Preferred seats are towards the front of the aircraft.

Basic fare passengers will also from now on be able to pre-reserve a standard, exit or Preferred seat for a fee.

More details when they are publicly released.

Are they going more like Air Canada and United where you can purchase or more like Delta where it's a separate fare class?

The more things change (WS) the more they remain the same...

It's essentially exactly like Air Canada where any passenger can buy Preferred seats at any time after ticketing, subject to availability. Some fare levels like EconoFlex will continue to receive standard seat assignment at no cost and pay less for than Econo fares for Preferred seats.

Presumably WS Golds and Platinums will get this free as well.

Yes although I haven't seen that in print yet.

Just noticed the rates are reflected online under seat fees.

https://www.westjet.com/en-ca/travel...s/service-fees

Previously on the 737-800 emergency exit row 13 was considered less desirable due to the lack of seat recline and assigning seats in this row was free which was great since it offers 3 - 4 extra inches of legroom and priority boarding. Interesting how in a short order it goes from being free and less desirable to preferred and at a price premium.
