NA Meal Service

It looks like the 737-800s have ovens now? For flights over 4 hours, the 7M8, 767 and 737-800 menus are combined with hot food. And what about routes like YYC-YYZ, a major trunk route, which is > 4 hours going east-west but under 4 hours the other way?

YYCguy Nov 17, 2018 7:59 pm

It’s my understanding that YYC-YYZ, normally under 4 hours, will maintain fresh food for purchase onboard due to the importantance of this route in the market.

Flights under 4h will offer dry BOB

Flights over 4h and all YYZ-YYC-YYZ offer fresh and dry BOB (including hot meals for 7M8 and 800. 700/600 to come).

The PBOB program has been terminated and will be returning in Q2 2019.

So presumably some of the 800s have ovens! Cool! I'm guessing then the 800s will be first to get 2x2 seating of the 737 NG fleet.

Had a 1 hour flight to connect to a 3.5 hour flight. Had to rush at connecting airport through security and customs. No time to get food. The email sent the day before flight said buy on board will be available. Wow! Talk about a lot of unhappy people. Hungry and only chips or bar or hummus to buy. The air hostesses had to put up with a lot of complaining. They encourages everyone to complain to westjet. So sad to see them going downhill.

They were doing the same with the horrible mush bowls in Plus and the having snacks in Plus a year and then some ago, so not really going downhill as much as staying there.

Hot food in plus on WS713 this week; vegetable lasagna, steak sandwich or chicken pad Thai were the options. I had the steak sandwich; overall it was tasty, grainy mustard, onion and cheese with some red potatoes. Not sure I would use a baguette however as the bottom was mushy, ciabatta would hold up better. FA told me it’s hard to manage preparation as all options are heated in a sealed box and lasagna can be delivered fresh or frozen making it difficult to know if it’s heated entirely and apparently they aren’t supposed to start heating until seatbelt sign is off. The back has Mac n cheese or pizza as options (didn’t see them). It’s not fine dining but for a PE meal it’s decent.

Thumbs up on hot food!

But, oh my gawd, those pictures make it look awful. I know we probably shouldn’t expect elegant plating and service like proper J class ... but come on ... a cardboard box, revealing a plastic covered tray? Eww. It looks like a Lean Cuisine microwave meal plunked straight down in front of you.

That sandwich looks worse than a Lean Cuisine microwavable meal in my opinion. I don't understand how a sandwich with a baguette can be heated with potatoes so the bread isn't mushy and falling apart since it's all in one sealed tray.

At least with a frozen entree, the meal is designed to be heated all together, like beef stew or a pasta dish.

I was travelling with a Delta Medallion Gold or Platinum guy a few weeks ago who had some editorial comments along those lines. Particularly since he had flown the 767 from YYZ to YYC in Plus, he thought it was a cutback.

I've experienced the hot meal in Premium on the 737 Max once. Based on that experience, I'll be declining meal service for the foreseeable future.

I really hope that box of hot mush, errr, "steak sandwich" is just an interim thing.

WestJet's communication about the new "Premium" replacing Plus has indicated that there's a lot more coming than just true J seats and little cabin dividers. They communicated, if I recall, that they were going to significantly up their food game, too.

Note on the new webpage promoting Premium . . . there's this photo. Plated entrees of real food. Not a cardboard box of mush and goo!

And the tagline to their photo says "Guests will enjoy an enhanced inflight dining experience with exclusive menu offerings". That sounds like they're pitching something a lot better than a warmed up sandwich in a box!

The webpage is here: https://www.westjet.com/en-ca/travel...mfortredefined (This photo with the happy diners enjoying their enhanced dining experience is at the bottom left of that page.)

A refined experience.
Guests will enjoy an enhanced inflight dining experience with exclusive menu offerings and exceptional
wines. Enhanced amenities ensure your comfort throughout the flight

Huh. This photo looks nothing like the meal photos that YYCFasha showed in post # 8, above. It's like the pictures are from a totally different airline.

So. WestJet people. Please explain. Is the current Premium "meal" a temporary thing? Are there greater things than warm-sandwich-in-a-warm-box coming soon?? (If not, you might want to Photoshop some sandwich-mushboxes into this picture to show the real thing!:p

Anyone use to the premium cabin at Delta or Air Canada would be disappointed with that steak sandwich. Do they not have people on staff who know how to do this?

Or better yet:
