jackson hole float trips
 

looking for things to do while we are out there. Specifically any recommendations on good outfits to take a float trip with.

Are you interested in whitewater rafting or fishing? Fishing would be a good option in late season and there are tons of guides in the area. There really isn't any whitewater late in the year to be had.

I wish I could talk the wife into some fishing but that's not in the cards I'm afraid. We ended up going with the 'sands' float trip and I'll find out tomorrow how that turns out. We are staying here in Jackson Hole at the Snow King Resort (horrible, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone) and have been mostly having a really good time. I had forgotten how much I love this area of the country. Yellowstone today was absolutely incredible.

To the OP - I don't mean to hijack the thread, but would you care to expand on your Snow King experience? I am headed there later this week for a conference (did not have a choice of accommodations) and I am wondering about what I can expect this week.

sure. It was fairly awful.

The first two nights we had a room on the 2nd flood (if you get a room with a 2xx number, refuse it on the spot). The AC didn't work very well so we sweated through the night. The 3rd night we demanded a change of room and were moved to the 4th floor where the AC worked.

The showers were brutal. Apparently this place was built back in a time where all the water is linked, so the water temp is constantly getting hotter and colder all the time. And I don't mean 'slightly' hotter and colder. I mean like hell fire hot to arctic cold at a moments notice.

The place was generally dirty and not well kept. The lobby, cooridors and elevators were just disgusting. The 'lounge' had good barkeeps but again was generally run down looking.

The front desk staff had that 'we know you have to stay here so we dont really have to be nice about it' attitude. Fortunately I only had to deal with them twice and I was extremely nice both times trying to get what I needed with honey.

The location is not too bad but it's far enough from city center that you will probably want to drive. Whatever you do, don't take the free shuttle from city center though. The shuttle runs all through town and it takes forever to get back to the hotel on it.


Except for the hotel, we had a fantastic trip. Yellowstone was great, the sands rafting trip we took was awesome, the dinner theater was fantastic, and the eating establishments were of very high quality.

on the eating front, i highly recommend the snake river steakhouse (think that was its name) right off the square in city center. The food and service there were just right.

Thanks for the rundown. My wife and I just arrived here last night and checked in while it was dark. So, I don't have a good sense of much yet. Got a 4th floor room on which the number on the door is written in ink as the number fell off and was not replaced evidently.

Our room is nothing special, but clean and the front desk folks were nice.

However, the hallways definitely have that college dorm feel to them.

I'll post more as the week goes on.

I have a conference at the Snow King Resort as well. Thanks for the warning.

Did you ever see the Clint Eastwood movie, Every Which Way but Loose (1978). A lot of it was shot at the Snow King, and there probably has not been a whole lot of upgrades done during the last 30 years. :)

My wife and I stayed there from 8/14-8/20. As I mentioned before, our room was clean with a small balcony looking out the back. There is construction going on so the view was mostly the staging area for equipment in the foreground, but the distant mountain were nice.

Considering the rate, the rooms were nothing special. Lighting in the rooms is fairly poor so at night the rooms are pretty dim. But you don't go to Jackson Hole to stay in your room. The hallways and public areas truly need upgrading. The carpets are all wrinkled and wavy. The cinder block hallways feel like a college dorm. The elevators need fixing as my wife was trapped in one for about 5 minutes one day (she took the stairs the rest of our visit).

I was there for a conference and had a number of meals at the venue. I never get too excited about buffet meals, but they did a fairly good job. The final night was a game dinner that included buffalo and elk. The elk was really good.

The pool area is fine, nothing spectacular and the location of Snow King is great for not having a car. The main downtown area is less than a mile walk. I highly recommend The Bunnery restaurant for breakfast - it is right downtown.

The room tv has a remote that you can only scroll up and down the channels. So you can go to channel 5, for example, unless you scroll there.

We also did the alpine slide and mini golf one day. Nothing spectacular and a little pricey in my opinion.

I think our rate was $205 per night. Considering the quality of the venue, I thought that was high.
