Advice on Santa Fe

Would love some advice on a future stay in Santa Fe in February. Never been there.. Should I stay in ABQ or SAF ? Any lodging you can recommend and any restaurants I should try ? Thanks in advance,

Keep in mind that Santa Fe is about an hour from Albuquerque, so probably better to stay in SAF if that's the place you want to see. If flying you'll most likely arrive in ABQ (the only scheduled service to SAF is from DEN, and not very convenient), then will have to drive up I-25.

Anything in particular you want to see/do while there? Museums? Galleries? Skiing?

There are a few threads that reference Santa Fe in this forum; you may want to check those out. As for driving between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, it is about an hour drive as silverthief2 has stated... in good weather.

Albuquerque, and New Mexico, in general, has been experiencing odd (snowy) weather closing I25 and I40. You may want to get to Santa Fe and stay there, or spend a few days there, and then a few days in Albuquerque to ensure you are able to get to ABQ.

Are you looking for fancy, a dump, or something in between?

$150 - 200 max per night..

I'd check out Inn of the Governors. I've stayed there and enjoyed it - great breakfast and try to get a room with a fireplace. I've more recently stayed at the Hilton Santa Fe, but only to get Hilton points - it wasn't bad, but it doesn't have the full Santa Fe experience.

novaguy30's advice about Inn of the Governors is good. Inn of the Anasazi is another nice one. Both these will likely be up around or slightly above your max rate, though. A place that's not as fancy as those two, but is still nice, and is less $$$, is the El Rey Inn.

There is lots of good eating, but I strongly recommend Geronimo for dinner. Consistently excellent.

There are some great hotels right near the plaza in Santa Fe - they will be a lot more expensive than the "chain" hotels out towards the airport.

Make sure you eat at The Compound - it's a life changing meal!

One of my favourite hotels in the world is the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort. It's about 20-25 minutes from Santa Fe, but worth the drive. The resort is tucked back in the hills, VERY peaceful and quiet. The staff goes above and beyond, the pools are great, the golf course is pretty good, and the hotel is modern and comfortable.

A few years ago, you could get this hotel on Priceline for $85 or less. But those days are long gone. Sometimes mid-$100s specials pop up on Hyatt.com, but usually you will pay $200+ for the resort. It's a great hotel.

I've also heard good things about the Inn of the Anasazi, but have never stayed there personally.

A couple of years ago, we stayed at the Holiday Inn on the main four lane road into town. It's at least a 4-6 minute drive from downtown, but in a nice location with restaurants nearby. Very affordable and breakfast was included.

There is a motel near downtown called (or use to be called) the Garret Inn. Under $100, clean, and you are 5 or so blocks from the plaza and right next to canyon road. I am not sure if it still has the same name because the owner passed away recently. He was very cool. He was the bartendar in the afternoon, and was a lot of fun to talk to.

The Hyatt Regency Tamaya is in Bernalillo, which is a suburb of Albuquerque. It is much much closer to Albuquerque than to Santa Fe.

I would leave about an hour to get between the Santa Fe plaza and this hotel, in good weather daylight.

The hotel's website says that it is a 40 minute drive from the Santa Fe airport (SAF), which is on the southwest side of Santa Fe.
