Four hours at PDX in Jan.
 

I will have about 4 hours to kill in Portland. Is there anything near the airport that would be interesting? This will be my first visit to the city. Thanks

You could ride MAX to downtown/the riverfront or to the Lloyd Center Mall.

MAX is Portland's light rail system. I belive it departs to/from the airport every 15-20 minutes.

Wow cow.

MAX will take you downtown in about 45 minutes. It leaves from just outside the airport terminal at the south (Alaska) end of the ticket area. You buy a ticket before you get on and it's good for (I think) 90 minutes of riding. (You don't give it to the conductor or trainman, but keep it as proof of payment and show it if an inspector shows up.)

If you're a book hound, see if you can get over to Powell's books, one of the biggest if not the biggest bookstore in the world.

That said, the airport has a number of interesting shops, including a small Powells, and a "made in Oregon" shop--not a bad way to kill a couple of hours, but maybe not 4.
