Luggage scales unchecked for five years at PHX and AZA

According to the Arizona Republic, luggage scales weren't checked for accuracy for five years! The article calls out "most" luggage scales at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and zero scales at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport

It goes on to say that 25% of scales at PHX had "problems" and does not say anything about Mesa-gateway.

I wonder if we will see small claims or class action lawsuits arising from improperly assessed overweight baggage fees.

FWIW - inaccuracy alone is not sufficient to state a cause of action. The inaccuracy must be enough to result excess baggage fee in order to qualify.

Based on the state audit report, there is only 1 substantiated complaint. Also - the audit reveals that 5 out of 64 scales inspected were against consumers.

It is highly unlike a class action based on the information so far.

Of greater concern is the question of, "What have the state auditors or the AZ Dept. of Ag. been doing for five years if this is supposed to be an annual review?"

My tax dollars not at work, apparently - seems like a hard fail in the audit scheduling process.

For decades the State of Arizona had a Department of Weights and Measures. They were so effective that they had to go away. And so in 2016 the state legislature quietly buried them in the Dept of Agriculture. The complaint and inspection system has been broken ever since.
