Things to do/see between El Paso and Albuquerque?
 

hi
have 2 days from leaving elpaso to flying out of albuquerque and trying to find things to do on the way up(have visited little off this route carlsbad caverns and santa fe before).
any suggestions?was going to go white sands then sevilleta wildlife refuge-cant work out with the pueblo acoma is worth going to as its quite a drive-or just go to the pueblo museum in alb..
any other ideas greatly appreciated!

If you're going to go to Acoma TODAY (September 2) is the day to do it. It's their annual Feast Day. There will be traditional dances and other ceremonial events at the old village throughout the day. NO PHOTOGRAPHY ALLOWED.

The Indian Puebo Cultural Center in Albuquerque is worth it. There's all sorts of other things to do and see in Albuquerque, depending on what you're interested in. If you haven't done it before, the tram ride up to the top of Sandia Peak is worth it. There's a restaurant up there and some nice hiking trails. It's over 10,000 feet, so quite a bit cooler than Albuquerque.

Wikitravel has a self-guided Breaking Bad Tour of Albuquerque, if that's your thing.

But if you have any bit of "geek" in you, you should head west on US 60 out of Socorro and visit the Very Large Array. It's about an hour's drive into a mostly deserted area, but if you like science fiction or astronomy, it may be one of the coolest places you can visit.

visit will be in 2 weeks so will miss the acoma event-but wondering whether should visit -or just go to the cultural centre and then enjoy the tacos and pizza night at the restaruant afterwards!

Well, I think the Trinity Site Open House (Oct 7) is outside your window. White Sands Missile Range only lets the public "tour" the site of the world's first nuclear explosion twice a year: the first Saturdays of April and October.

Acoma Pueblo is worth it. Only a few people actually still live in the 13th Century village atop the mesa, but most of the members of the tribe have a house there for ceremonial occasions. Outside of feast days, there are guided tours (with a fee) and you are allowed to take some photos (with a few restrictions that they'll tell you about). The visitors' center at the base of the mesa is very nice, with a cafe and a small museum as well as a gift shop. That's where you sign up for the tours of the village.

Laguna Pueblo (just East of Acoma and right on I-40) has one of their major feast days on September 19. The Laguna village isn't as old as Acoma, but many members of the tribe still live there, so it's less of a "museum piece". The Laguna tribe is the largest of the pueblos and they have several villages - each with it's own festival.

re laguna-maybe if this is nearer might be easier than acoma...

I don't really know that much about White Sands. Visiting the Trinity Site is on my "bucket list".

Laguna is definitely closer to and easier to access from Albuquerque than Acoma. Laguna is visible from I-40. "Old" Acoma is some 20-30 miles off the main highway (although the tribe does have a casino adjacent to the Interstate.)
