Hiking Nr Tuba City, NE AZ

I am planning a hike to the Ha Ho No Geh Canyon, (which is off R 264) a little known area on Hopi/Navajo lands adjacent to Coal Mine Canyon and as I have a 2WD rental, must leave the car by the roadside.

I will be leaving one hotel and on the way to another so have to carry my bags with me. Apart from the usual advice about keeping items in the trunk, would I be better to risk taking the car on the unpaved road from R264 to the canyon, where it would be out of sight, and hope it doesn't rain. I am not familiar with this area which is off the beaten track.

I could rent a 4WD but have never driven one before and doubt if this would help if it rains as the dirt road is sandy.

Five or six years ago I drove on the road that (I think) you are describing, and I did it in a rental Mazda 6 without any issues. Caveats: It was dry, I drove pretty slowly, and my wife and daughter made me stop numerous times to get out and look at things.

There are numerous very enjoyable unpaved roads in the Navajo Nation with great vistas - have a good time.

Thanks Wilbur. Let's hope it's dry. It'll take all day. I'll leave my neighbour's number in case I get lost!
