Looking for restaurant/meeting spot on WA/BC border

We hope to meet up with some friends who are living in Vancouver BC. We will be staying in the Seattle area (near Federal Way) and are thinking of driving north and they drive south to meet somewhere between Bellingham and the border for lunch and hanging out. We hope to spend about 3 hours together, so a decent family restaurant for lunch and maybe something interesting to see or walk around would be nice. This will be in early August, so weather should be fine.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have friends that live in Bellingham and I went to visit them back in March. We met in Fairhaven (just slightly south of Bellingham and is right on the water (it is near the Alaska ferry terminal)). Anyways, the area of Fairhaven has plenty of places to eat at (we ate at Fairhaven Pizza) plus plenty of shops/stores to walk around aftewards.

Haven't been to Semiahmoo since they went under and got bought, but a couple of the restaurants seem to be getting okay reviews on sites like Yelp. http://www.semiahmoo.com/dining.php

Otherwise there are a variety of places - burgers to sit-down in Blaine that might work. Or if YOU want to be the ones waiting for hours at the border, there are a couple of fish-and-chip shops on the main drag in White Rock BC that are very good, even very good by British standards. White Rock is a fun little town too.
