US Drivers License

Hey there,

i wanted to ask if there is any way to get an american driver's license without actually living there? I used to have an AZ Driver's license but I had to move back to Europe and it expired recently. Is there any way of getting it back? I travel there a lot by visa waiver, and my european passport really sucks - an american driver's license makes live much easier ;)

I would appreciate your help!

First off---why are you posting this here? May get better feedback posting elsewhere.

In general you cant if you are a not a resident.

the rules are at the state level so each state has their own rules. for a state to issue a license a person needs to have some sort of residency in the state.

Some states have a special set of rules for Canadians than they do for other counties. Many retired Canadians split residence between Canada and someplace in the southern states (California, Florida, or Arizona) in winter.

How did your AZ license expire? They typically last until you turn 65 (mine doesn't expire for quite some time).
yes you may have to periodically get a new photo, but officially the expiration date is far off.

If you still have the old license, you can get it renewed with a quick visit to the DMV when you're here.

my AZ license was only issued for the time of my stay in Arizona... They took the date which the immigration officer wrote into the admission stamp out of my passport ;)

This was quite common in the past but you are no longer able to do it anywhere as far as I know. Most states request proof of extended legal residency (student/work visa, green card) or citizenship. Some states have experimented in the past with drivers privilege cards which would mean that undocumented people would be allowed to drive just so the cops know who they are in case of an accident, California may still have those.
