upgrade bidding success
Been a long time since I've flown VA - go back to the DL and NW partnership days.
Back then I had 2 successful upgrade bids - 1 from PER-MEL that I think cost about AUD500 or so, the other at checkin for BNE-LAX and I went from PE to Business for about AUD900.
Back in Australia and flying tonight PER-SYD-MEL on the redeye. I bid AUD500 for PER-SYD and AUD150 for SYD-MEL and both were accepted.
In the US, I figure anything under US$100 an hour is worth it so I'm satisfied.
And I'll pick up so UA miles to join my orphan AA miles.

I bid AUD$315 (about AUD$20 over minimum bid) for MEL to PER and got the upgrade about 24 hours out. It falls within my US$50/hour rule for mid-haul flights. Also first time in Australia so was interested in trying out VA's lounge and business class.
