Cancelling an Award Ticket

I'm having to cancel an business class award ticket to Denpasar booked for travel in October.

According to the website cancellations can't be done online at the present time but only via contacting the call centre. I know I should get back all my points but what I was interested in knowing is what people's experience has been in getting a refund for taxes paid? Is VA refunding these or would you need to revert to making a travel insurance claim?

From link below VA looks to be paying back taxes, but not the fare. (so in part not relevant to you)
There is no reason to cancel until just before the flight or as late as the t&c's allow. If the airline cancels it is an easier process.
If you cancel can you claim in insurance?

Turns our that VA contacted me to say my flight had been cancelled and the refund of the points and taxes are being processed. VA claims my points refund and taxes will be processed with 21 days.

I'll wait and see.

The refund request I submitted on July 3 eventually got processed on Aug 7 and the points are back in my account. As to the refund of the charges back to my credit card VA have said to allow 10 business days from that date. I'm hoping that means that the credit will be back into my account at the end of this week.
