VA ceases international ops, 90% dom reduction

Temporary suspension of all international services from 30 March to 14 June 2020 inclusive.
• Melbourne to Los Angeles services suspended from 20 March.
• Inaugural Brisbane to Haneda service, postponed from 29 March.
• Inaugural Melbourne to Denpasar service, postponed from 29 March.
Virgin Australia will operate a reduced international schedule between now and 29 March 2020 “

Domestic changes
In response to weakened demand, the Group will reduce domestic capacity by around 50 per cent until 14 June 2020. This includes the grounding of twenty Boeing 737, six A320, two ATR and five Airbus A330 aircraft from the Group’s domestic fleet.
The route and schedule detail of these changes across Virgin Australia and Tigerair Australia is currently being worked through and will be published over the next week.

It seems that customer service is only willing to speak to people who have a flight within 24 hours, so how can someone with a flight that has now been cancelled switch to an earlier flight?

Is there any service at all operating between the USA and Australia? DL LAX-SYD at least a few times a week? QF? UA?

QF have followed VA with all intl services stopped by month end until end of may, DL stopped
  • Suspension of service from Los Angeles to Sydney starting March 18 through April 11.
United will be the only operator from what I can see unless your a parcel

Published 18 March https://www.executivetraveller.com/n...ia-lax-flights

United is the latest airline to suspend flights to Los Angeles, although San Francisco remains on the network map.
<snip>
United has now joined American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Virgin Australia in axing direct flights between Australia and Los Angeles.
<snip>
It does look like that UA SFO-SYD and SFO-MEL will be only USA<---->Australia flights operating late March. But that may change.

Thanks - VA canceled my flight earlier today...so, I’m leaning towards getting a full refund.

Currencies will come heavily into play too here if you are talking mega $1000s of fares.

If you booked $A10,000 of flights Jan 1 on Virgin Australia site that converted to $US7000 exactly.

A $A10,000 credit today is 20% less in USD - about $US5600 or so.

Anyone had any luck getting an refund back from Expedia? On there VA International flights?

My June 7th flight from LAX-BNE with VA was canceled. I got an email to fill out a "Travel Credit" form: Virgin Australia: Travel Bank Credit Request Form. It says that instead of issuing a full refund to my credit card originally used for booking, the funds will be credited to VA's Travel Bank (https://www.virginaustralia.com/au/e...s/travel-bank/) account.

Any idea what this account is? I just want my $ back into the credit card....and not deal with VA anymore.

no airline should be refunding any fares right now. If they do, they will certainly close down.

As long as airlines get rid of most of their costs, they will survive.

This means reducing staff, with no redundancy payments, reducing aircraft & only giving credits not refunds.

If an airline goes in administration/chapter 11, I don't think they have to pay any debts due, until later, whatever later means.

If some airlines don't survive, that will mean massive average price increases & therefore reduced tourism, which is no good for any economy.

You won't likely get a cash refund. Travel Bank is like a credit towards a future VA flight.

Unfortunately the airlines don't have enough cash to refund 3 full months of tickets for everyone. Travel insurance is your only option.

I have travel insurance for my upcoming flights with VA, amongst other things. The insurance carrier has completely washed their hands of this situation and will provide no coverage whatsoever, unless we actually contract Coronavirus.

no insurance co. is stupid enough to cover pandemics

.

For tickets purchased in Australia they are covered by Australian Consumer Law. If your flight is cancelled and no reasonable substitute available you are entitled to a full refund.
