VA applies to the IASC for BNE-HND (Tokyo-Haneda)

In conjunction with a codeshare partnership with NH. NH is expected to be awarded the MEL-HND route from the Japanese regulator.

Wow! Great news. I'd love to fly VA metal to HND.

I would welcome this with open arms. As a DL Skymiles member, getting from Japan to Australia directly just isn't possible. BNE isn't as ideal as SYD for me, but I wouldn't mind the short connection.

SYDNEY (Jiji Press) — Budget carrier Virgin Australia has applied for the allocation of a landing and departure slot at Tokyo International Airport at Haneda.

The airline submitted the application to the International Air Services Commission, the Australian government organ said Wednesday. If it wins the slot, the Australian carrier would achieve its entry to the Japanese aviation market.

At Haneda, the number of daily slots for flights to and from Australia will be increased by four from March 2020, with two of them set to be allocated to Australian airlines.

According to the commission, Virgin Australia filed for one of the two slots on Tuesday to operate flight services between Haneda and Brisbane.

Virgin Australia is set to vie with Qantas Airways, which has applied for both slots. The commission will reach a decision by the end of October, after seeking public comments.

IMHO VA will have a better chance of these 2 slots than QF

I suspect this would come at the expense of HKG routes but given HKG loadings that's probably OK.

VA could really use this to feed TT service and BNE is a good gateway for NZ flights.

Could this be an A330?

Definitely could be, and almost certainly would be.

BNE-HND is shorter than MEL-HKG

I wonder if VS would be willing to restart Tokyo service at HND and, along with their partnership with ANA, create an alternative Kangaroo Route to LHR.

They'd need a slot at HND which is no easy feat. But otherwise it seems like a decent idea, at least for BNE O-D traffic.

VS actually do have one.

The UK has 4 daytime slots at HND; 2 for UK airlines and 2 for Japanese ones. BA only uses 1 slot, presumably because VS holds the other one that they're not currently using. BA notably still offers LHR-NRT, so it's not like BA doesn't want to serve TYO twice a day...

The submission specifically says A330

How can an airline hold a slot if they don't use it?

I suspect when there is no or little demand for the slot. Perhaps NRT demand has fallen away.

The slot being discussed is at HND. I don't think HND slot demand is low.

Back in 2014, Japan apparently mandated that airlines serving NRT that would begin newly serving HND should continue serving the same country from NRT as well. VS didn't want to fly to both NRT and HND, so they stayed at NRT until they pulled out in 2015. If VS decides to return, they may be permitted to serve only HND.

Apparently this "Narita rule" has either been relaxed or is no longer enforced as there are numerous examples of airlines serving only HND and not NRT (i.e. France, the UK, Austria, etc.).

That's the only reason I can think of that BA serves HND and NRT instead of HND twice a day.
