Booking Outbound then adding Inbound

I'm hoping to book 2 UC redemption flights to MIA in a couple of weeks when flights are released. We will be in the US fora few weeks so I am looking at booking the outbound as soon as I find availability and then adding the return some weeks later. Has anyone got experience of doing this?

Not a problem. Just call VS when you're ready.

i have just done this
wait till your outbound is available then a day later ring up
book outbound on required date and inbound a day later (this means you pay taxes on the return not one ways)
tell them your are going to alter dates when your dates are available ,they will make a note on file so you will not have to pay amendment fees.
wait till your return is available ring up.

Well thats how it worked for me.
