I am looking for Shanghai - Guangzhou (one way), I can see availability on the United Airlines site with Air China so I think there is availability. It says 15k miles and Ł5.80 taxes. Would it be the same amount of miles with Virgin?
Unfortunately it's no-go for you, Air China awards using VS miles are only available on the LHR-PEK route on roundtrip.

Mind you, CA F between LHR-PEK is widely known as one of the best (if not the best) value awards you can get on VS.

Air China redemptions are currently unavailable? I called in and was told that due to them unilaterally cancelling people's tickets, and the resultant annoyed Flying Club members, Virgin had been re-assessing the relationship. I was told this had been going on since January 17th and that there was no firm date for the Air China redemptions to return

Unilateral cancellations of award ticket on Air China have been happening with other FFPs too. Aeroplan has had issues with Air China as well, and I think a few other FFPs also reported similar problems. Given that these are award tickets issued by non-Air China miles, whichever FFP that issued those tickets ended up holding the bags for Air China.

I can understand why Virgin would want to reassess the relationship with Air China given the latter doesn't seem to understand the meaning of a legal binding contract.

Another question about Singapore airlines

Has anyone recently managed to book a ticket on Singapore airlines using Virgin Atlantic Airmiles?

Check the thread. A long haul in Business or First isn't happening - VS even makes it clear that most of the long haul fleet is excluded.

But if you're looking for an intra-Asia in Y then your chances are much better.

Tried to book a Delta award with my VS miles ... was told there was no availability for a SFO-SEA flight, even though the lowest level awards were showing on Delta's website...

Searching on Air France for Delta flights gives a better representation of what Delta makes available to partners.
