Hi,

I have acquired 2x Premium Economy Upgrade vouchers from the American Express Black credit card scheme and I am planning to use them on my first redemption, for two return tickets to Boston sometime between late April and June in 2014.

We will be two adults travelling with a child (aged 4) and I wondered what the most cost effective way of getting a third premium economy ticket would be?

Should I purchase a economy ticket in an upgradeable bucket for the child and use further air miles to bump him up to economy or should I buy him a premium economy ticket outright? Would it be better to buy the economy/premium economy ticket for myself and use the upgrade voucher for him?

I appreciate it will probably depend on what fare prices are available, but would appreciate any general advice.

You need to get the calculator out and do some dummy bookings to check the cash costs of the different options.

I'd certainly check the price of buying an upgradable Y fare against the cost of a straight cheapest PE one. It might be cheaper just to buy straight into PE.

As to who should have the paid for ticket - well it depends on what your attitude is to collecting miles and tier points. If you are collecting (and by having the credit card I assume you are as the vouchers can only be used on a miles redemtion) then it would be best for you to have the paid fare so getting the miles and TPs and using the reward seats for the other adult and child.

In general you probably should redeem for the child and buy the cash ticket yourself.

As mentioned, it's often better value to just buy straight into PE.
