Where are the best VS fares found?

I may be spending a few months in our London office and will want to do some personal travel ex-UK, probably to JFK or SFO. Class of travel depends purely on available fares and how thick my wallet feels at the time. Are the VS fares offered on the website competitive with local travel agents? Also are ex-UK fare rules stringent on advance purchase requirements, or can good fares be gotten right up to the last minute?

There are several good sites for booking air travel ex UK, I have always found expedia to be competitive. However there is no real easy answer, you need to check a variety of fares each time, as what is best for one flight / route may not be the best for another.

I am currently looking to book a trip to MIA in November to see Bruce Springsteen and the lowest fare I have found so far is on the Virgin website, as they give a 10 online booking discount. I amsure however that nearer the time there will be lower ones.

My own personal experience is that leaving it to the last minute on popular flights is a bad move.

Depending on how important travelling on a Virgin ticket is (i.e. do you want Virgin airmiles), consider looking at buying Continental tickets on Virgin codeshare flights.

This is what I do when I want to travel Upper Class (am paying 1599 + tax, per person, for LGW-MIA return next week). You have to shop around for these sort of prices though. I have got/seem some good deals on Continental tickets for Virgin flights on the following sites:
- http://www.airline-network.co.uk

but my flights for this upcoming trip were purchased from Wayte Bros Ltd ( http://www.waytetravel.co.uk/ )

Hope this is helpful.

I'd also check out code-share partners like Continental Airlines. CO sells seats on LHR-EWR and LHR-SFO Virgin flights, re-labelled with CO flight numbers. They sometimes have seats with fares less than what Virgin charges for those same flights.

For example, I found $476 economy roundtrip fares with CO on the EWR-LHR-EWR route, while VS was charging $675 for the same flights.
