Why is Virgin Atlantic called VS ?

Virgin America is actually VX 
V Australia is VA.
The VA code was probably assigned to another airline when Virgin Atlantic was set up, so IATA issued them something else that was available.

When Virgin Atlantic started operations in 1984 VA was in use by Viasa of Venezuela who ceased Trading in 1999 allowing the 2 Letter code to be allocated to Virgin America in 2007

Regardless, Virgin Group eventually got the VA code.

It's down to how they're allocated.
First, the airline's REQUEST - So, Virgin *probably* asked for "VA" or "VI" (maybe)
If those are taken, it's then down to Capitalisation, so "Virgin Atlantic" would mean "V.A."
Again, if that's taken, or the same, it's then down to the first and last characters of the name...
So - "Virgin Atlantic Airways" (which was the official name) takes the V from the start, and the S from the end = VS.
Don't believe me? Why do you think BMI (old - "British MidlanD") is BD?!? :-)

OZ = Asiana
BR = Eva Air
NH = All Nippon Airways (where did they get the H?)
EG = Japan Asia Airways (No E and no G; shutdown in 2008)
TG = Thai Airways International (there is no G anywhere)
