Reward Booking - Can You Upsell to First Before Check in?

Reward Booking - Can You Upsell to First Before Check in?
I am making a Reward Flight booking using EK miles with VA from SFO to Cabo before they switch to AS flights in April.
I am booking a Main Cabin Select fare, can I upsell and pay to upgrade to First for the fare difference (currently $100 one way).
Or is this only allowed at check-in for rewards / partner reward bookings?
