Can you change or cancel a return leg after starting a trip?
 
I booked a return trip using the VX credit card. For this trip there's a risk that I'd either need to change or cancel the return leg. Is it better to split off the itinerary before flying out, or is it fine to change it after flying the first leg?

It's fine to change after flying the first leg. In fact sometimes it's better because the computer won't attempt to reprice the first segment after it has been flown.
